1. EXACTLY - "Southern Pride" my ass
Edited on Fri Jan-15-10 03:14 PM by Taverner
If Southerners wanted to express Southern Pride, there is a number of things they could do. A number of flags they could use.

I always thought someone should come along with a "Southern Pride" flag that has a Dobro on it against a blue background.

The Dobro is the only instrument that was born in the Southern US

3. Actually, the Dopyera Brothers were from Chicago,
not the south. They made Dobro, and National Steel Guitars there.

2. It's not the Confederate Flag
Edited on Fri Jan-15-10 03:30 PM by Recursion
This is (was) the flag of the Confederate States of America:

This is the Confederate Navy Jack:

It was never, at any point, flown on Confederate soil: it was hoisted by vessels under weigh during combat.

4. The navy jack was designed as a naval flag, but it was used on the
battlefield because the design of the Confederate flag was too similar to various state flags and that confused the battlefield control. By 1864 the navy jack was being used by the Lee and others as the Confederate battle flag - on land, it was ONLY used as a battle flag, not as 'the Confederate flag' because it was distinctly different from state flags, and so was easily used to control the battle lines.

5. Small quibble ...

The Navy Jack, which is what the above picture is, was never used on land.

What was used on land was a similar visual design, but on a square and a darker blue.

That design was then incorporated into the Second and Third National flags.

8. Thanks. My mistake.
The battle flag adopted the design, but had differences.

I knew the design was the same, and it was adopted because it was easily recognizable through the haze and smoke of the battlefield, while many of the state flags of both sides were too similar to the Stars & Bars which wound up with commanders losing track of who was shooting at who.

Thanks for the clarification.

9. Not to mention that early on some Confederate units wore blue
And then the 2nd national flag looked too much like a flag of truce.

6. What RoyGBiv said
The battle colors used by some Confederate armies were a different color and shape.

7. More specifically, the 2nd Confederate Navy Jack
Many here and out in world don't know the difference. The staff at local HS got really embarrassed over it. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5570329&mesg_id=5577320)

13. Actually...
What is now considered the "Confederate flag" is not the Confederate Navy Jack. This is the current flag:

Note the difference in the shades of blue. The "Confederate flag" is another version of the "Southern Cross" battle flag:
