When does a US passport expire?

Mine is almost 10 years old and I thought they were good for ten years. I have looked over the state dept. site and as far as renewal it asks if I got within the last 15 years. I sent an email to them since they provided contact info and asked and got back a form email saying they can't answer questions because they get too many of them essentially. So, do I need to renew it now or do I have five years?

1. 5 years for minors and 10 years for adults

Without having to apply from scratch.

8. You should also be able to call them.

They should have toll-free numbers, because I had to get mine expedited last year. Mine also has an expiration date, ten years from when I got it. If yours doesn't and you know it's been almost ten years, then call them and find out what you need to do to renew it :)

Some countries will not let you in if your passport expires within the next 3 months or 6 months. The requirements vary by country, and are available on the State Department web site.

Although it actually expires in 10 years, many countries won't let you in if there's not at least 6 mos of time left on it.

14. 10 years. Renew it now. Its easy and fairly fast.

I just renewed mine with expedite option (extra $$) and got it back within 2 weeks. But my co-worker renewed hers recently without expedite and it still only took about 3 weeks. BTW, the expire date should be on your passport.
