Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) on Friday signaled he was "actively considering" putting his name in contention for the 2012 presidential race.

While Santorum later said he has "no great burning desire to be president," he stressed in a letter obtained by The Corner that he still had "a burning desire to have a different president of the United States."

He then urged supporters to donate to his political action committee, which he said was focused on stopping the Obama White House in 2010 and 2012.

"Through your support for America’s Foundation, we’ve engaged the left on fundamental issues ranging from control of the U.S. Census to Health Care, abortion and the huge spike in the size of government," he said in the lengthy letter, railing on groups like ACORN and the White House's approach to foreign policy. "Together, we’ve thrown down enough road-blocks to stall the most damaging elements of the Obama agenda."

Santorum added, "ou and I have a real, honest-to-goodness opportunity to defeat Barack Obama in 2012. As much as I hate to use these words, I think it’s obvious Americans are now hungry for 'real change.' "

9. It's hard to see Santorum ever, in all his remaining days, accepting his

defeat by Casey which turned him out of the U.S. Senate.

Some people operate under, let us say, mixed directives. Santorum may be one such. He rose to the Republican circle of leadership in the Senate and not long afterward was tossed from the upper chamber by Pennsylvania voters. Casey is a competent man but not really a deeply loved persona, and owes his victory to voters' advanced and justifiable distaste for Rick Santorum.

One force in Santorum demands adherence to hyper-conservative principles generally and orthodox Catholic doctrine especially. Many fundies of all stripes are drawn to Santorum's political conservatism but he speaks and behaves in such a rabid manner as to alarm their instincts for a return of the Kingdom. Santorum's path to the temple appears a lot more raw and violent than the one many of the fundies may have in mind. More bodies line the roads to the palace.

Another force is pure ego, and as a politician he has to feed it constantly, and constantly, because it is pure ego, the chunks of raw meat it wants are exponentially bigger. There he is in Iowa. There he is in South Carolina. There he is on FOX News. There he is sweetening his public talk with phrases like "honest-to-goodness," like a wolf being fitted for a sheep's costume before intercepting the girl with the basket of goodies for grandma.

In Umberto Eco's novel THE NAME OF THE ROSE the Catholic Church dispatches a severe, pinched-spirited asshole of an Inquisitor to a monastery to root out evil and condemn and then punish the wicked souls who purportedly lurk there in the Lord's house.

Santorum has much of that same scorched-earth, burn-the-witches temperament. His ego is running the show and can't move steadfastly forward without first killing the doctrinal adherent. A mixed directives warrior wounds himself as well as others. Santorum's quest is a doomed commitment.

He's too far right for contention. If the Repubs even want a realistic chance at the Presidency in '12, they'll pick someone closer to the middle (or who at least appears to be). It would be fun to watch him run for the trainwreck value, though. :)
