For the record breaking on CNN - the UN did not order doctors
to leave the field hospital.
Maybe the poor doctors were listening to the media spreading wild rumors.

1. That's even worse... Then the doctors should be prosecuted. They had patients in their care.
Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 10:06 AM by Leopolds Ghost
The term "standard of care" means something traditionally, legally and professionally.

If teachers abandoned a crowd of schoolchildren on the side of the road, they would go to jail for a long time.

2. That's not an excuse for abandoning patients
They blew off the Hippocratic Oath and left people to die. They should lose their medical and nursing licenses.
From an RN.

5. Just announced on TV
Check the UN link - they have updates on everything.
The US Sec Gen said the UN did not authorize that.

4. WTH? I saw that live last night on CNN and the Drs scrambled out of
the tents, leaving Gupta stunned.

Good to know that Gupta stayed all night and cared for the patients, none of them died overnight.

Google "Belgian UN Rwanda" for more Belgian UN clusterfuckery.

20. I've a new found respect for
Sanjay. I hadn't really cared for him over the years, thinking he just wanted to play a doctor on tv. My apologies to Dr. Gupta. Thank you , Sir for staying with those who needed you.

18. That's what I mean - it seemed like no one, including Gupta, knew why
the Drs suddenly bolted away. It was quite shocking.

Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 10:08 AM by liberalmuse
I didn't even bother to comment. It sounded too much like something the UN-hating right wing would put out there. Or an incompetent media. It may as well be the same fucking thing.

12. DIng ding
I'm betting they some of the Belgian doctors who just arrived but were under the protection of the UN (as is everyone) - so they simply blamed the UN - it's so easy.

16. To quote another poster, "They blew off their Hippocratic Oath and left people to die."
Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 10:14 AM by Leopolds Ghost
And yes, Belgians love to hate on the UN, they blamed the UN for asking them to risk their lives to save "black people" (their words) in Rwanda and refused to evac anyone but their precious nationals.

Of course they would be afraid of alleged violence in Haiti and ready to abandon their black patients at the drop of a hat.

24. Hard To Treat People WIth No Medicines...
All the medical training won't mean squat if you don't have the drugs and other supplies to administer to those in need. Not only did this quake take down all civil order, it destroyed hospitals which has made a bad problem worse. Plus there's the silly little needs like potable water and electricty to operate field hospitals.

Yep, it's easy to broadbrush and criticize from afar...it's a whole different world on the ground.

:hi:

17. It was what the doctors were saying so even if it was wrong it
was not being made up by "UN-hating right wing" or an incompetent media.

Because they were saying they were being ordered to leave

In some places it a appears to be getting more desperate.

25. Of course.
The media ALWAYS spreads information that is to some degree incorrect. And now when civil organization is disrupted the desperation for information is maximal yet the information itself is less sure. Its a horrible combination.

26. Old saying in the field medicine game
"Dead medics help no one."

None of us were there; none of us know how critical or dangerous the situation was. One would think after all the times the MSM has bs'ed us, we might turn on the crap detector and keep it on.

The first rule of medicine is do no harm. If a medic, whatever level, through some misguided sense of heroics or sheer pigheadedness, gets killed, harm is done. The available care and support just went down a notch or more, depending upon the skill level.

When I was an EMT, we were briefed many times that if the cops tell us to get the hell out because the situation was about to go ugly, we hauled. If we could take the patient(s) with us, great; if not, at least we stayed alive to come back.
