You know, as a vociferous critic of Obama, I've got to say something
He's doing this one right. He has responded to the Haitian crisis in a calm, compassionate and intelligent manner.

For those of you who are going on about how relief and supplies aren't getting to Haitians quick enough, I'm sorry, but you really don't know what you're talking about. A few key points for you to remember. First, there is one, count it, one functioning airport in the country and that airport is in no way shape or form designed to handle this kind of traffic or plane size. For having such a limited air destination, the folks on the ground are doing a great job of getting planes in, unloaded and out again, over and over, day and night. Furthermore, there are absolutely no functioning ports. Ships would be a wonderfully efficient way to get supplies and manpower into the country, but if you don't have functioning ports it is impossible for a lot of ships to dock and unload. The roll on/roll off ships that are required are on their way, but it takes time for them to get there.

Then there is the matter of getting the supplies and relief to the people. Haiti never had much of a ground transportation infrastructure to begin with, and after the quake it has deteriorated badly. The roads simply can't handle large trucks, they're covered with rubble and all that is going to take time and equipment to clear.

As far as those of you calling for air drops, you've never been in a situation where people are desperate. Let's ignore the fact that you've got to clear a drop zone (again it would take coordination and some heavy equipment) and that you have to have trained ground crews on the drop zone and still things go wrong on drops, let's ignore that. Let's say that you can indeed just shove shit out the door of the airplane like they do in the movies. Do you realize what would happen on the ground? Utter chaos, massive violence as people fight and kill to get some of the limited supplies for themselves. Do you really want to watch that on TV?

I hate to tell you this but the fact of the matter is that it takes time for massive, effective relief operations to take hold. The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Force as set sail and will get there Tuesday. Sorry, it takes time to load and organize a force such as this, and they don't have supersonic jet engines on the boats, so they have to sail in the normal way. It takes time.

And while we're on the Marines, as a person who is against our current wars, I would like to salute all of our military forces who are involved in this relief mission. I recognize, always have, the need for a military force in this country. They have now been tasked with a mission that is worthy of them and they're coming through with flying colors. For that I salute them.

I also salute all of the volunteers, NGO's and other organizations (including the fundy Christian ones) who are either are on the ground or will be on the ground helping out in this massive effort. They are all doing good work here.

Furthermore, I would like to congratulate each and every person who has donated their time, money and/or energy to helping out in this crisis. We are, as a country, currently living up to the ideals that are so often merely pious mouthings. We are truly showing the best side of this country.

Yes, yes, I recognize all of the history that lies between Haiti and the US, but you know what, that is the past and in this time of crisis it needs to remain in the past. What matters now is not who did what to whom ten, fifty, one hundred years ago. What matters is how we respond in the here and now, and we are responding in a such a great fashion, it makes one proud.

One last word, as much as many people don't like it, undertaking an operation this massive, on this scale, in such a environment as we're going to. It would be great if it all happened instantaneously, but the fact of the matter is that it can't. We have done a good job, especially under the circumstances of providing immediate help, now the second wave is coming in. I recognize that people in Haiti are dying daily due to the inability of aid to arrive, but frankly, moving the heavy equipment needed, even just the hand tools needed to help out takes time. This is a sad but inescapable fact. Sadly, more people are going to die, but that is the nature of a tragedy of this scale. But help is on the ground and more is arriving everyday.

So I guess I want to say to everybody who is involved in this, from the president to the military, the NGO's to those who contribute to the relief all across this country, you're doing good, and thank you.

2. Like Clinton, Obama is a good international statesman.
He makes us look good in the world community, and he uses our power wisely and with restraint.

And like Clinton, when it comes to domestic matters, Obama is, to put it kindly, much less impressive.

5. Port au Prince has a population of 3 million
The island has a population of 9 million and many rural villages are flattened too. 4200 troops are in Haiti or on ships, another 6300 will be there over the weekend. That doesn't count all the other countries that have sent search and rescue and other responders, or the NGOs or the UN, etc. I don't know how you mobilize to respond to this many people in a disaster where nobody had the chance to evacuate or otherwise prepare like they can in a hurricane. People complaining need either a therapy session or a lesson in gratitude.

10. Beautiful! K&R.
Thanks for the well-written words on this. It needed to be said. This is a tragedy that is extremely painful to watch, and it's wonderful that people care enough to get angry and frustrated at seeing their brothers and sisters suffering as their own. I understand why people are posting threads, angry that they feel Obama isn't doing enough. It would be easier to take the dittohead route and tell yourself that it is okay not to give a shit, and even justify your basest, most primitive and selfish thoughts as being somehow noble, when in reality, they are shedding their humanity and pissing on their own souls.

Of course, the entire world should have paid more attention to Haiti when it was just a very poor country, not a very poor country in the grip of extreme natural disaster.

But under present circumstances, all who are contributing to relief in all forms are doing a great job; and let us thank them, and wish them and the people of Haiti the best of luck!

Much better than the adrenaline junkies here. I'm always amazed at people who use every crisis in life to justify their hysteria.

The president's calm, reasonable demeanor is a good example for those who think attacking other posters over rescue minutiae is an appropriate response to the crisis. The haughtiness exhibited by some over details of appropriate response exemplifies only one thing: a personal problem.

The president has been exactly what the situation requires: calm but quick action.

18. That and a serious lack of knowledge about how emergency response operations work
I used to be a firefighte, I know about small scale emergency response works. I have an idea from that experience what large scale emergency response would entail, and those who think that we should have everything there, in place now are just showing how clueless they are about these sort of things.

19. You and I haven't agreed on much, but I will agree
that this will not be a feel-good mission no matter what, because as you say, people are dying, and that is why this is being called a disaster of epic proportion which will have stories of tragedy that will by far outnumber any positive stories to be told. Some disasters cannot just be made "alright" like a problem to be solved in a sit-com by the end of 30 minutes.

I keep using the example of a miner gets trapped in a collapsed mine, and how no matter how advanced we may want to believe we are, it still takes time and equipment and effort to get them out, alive or otherwise. There sometimes are no instant miracles to be performed, and here we are talking about tens of thousands trapped beneath heavy ruble, hundreds of thousand with the need to be treated medically, and millions to provide food and shelter to. This is going to be a very difficult situation for an extended period of time.

Anyone who thinks that this mission should have been under control by now is smoking something, or don't quite understand the magnitude of what actually happened in Haiti.

I do believe that this operation, in a long run, will be as successful as one can under circumstances that are by far the most trying that I have ever witnessed.

20. Yup, there are certainly logistical realities that have to be dealt with
But too many people are uninformed about these and think that with our technology, money and material we can be there yesterday. It just doesn't work that way. Hell, just the logistics of getting and loading supplies is a time consuming nightmare, much less getting the stuff there.

There will be problems. There will be mistakes. Hopefully, lessons will be learned. I honestly beleive this administration will try to learn from the mistakes made rather than try to ignore them or cover them up like the last one.

why are we so arrogant to judge haiti solely by one man, obama. it is a world effort. and no one country is boss of or responsible of the disaster.

that being said, you are right on with your post. agree totally.

32. Lot of props to hand out
As far as GWB is concerned, I'm wondering how much he was being "managed" by medication, booze, and manipulation (ref. George Jones). The one who showed up today ai'nt too bad, still kind of a goober, but he's gonna do some good work.
Roger Ebert gets props for slamming /pwning ol' Flush Limburger.
Keith O and Rachel get props for "the grown-ups news". My wife despises conservative politics (recovering Catholic), and largely avoids political and world news. But she has some folks in Haiti she has helped, through a co-worker's church group, so she has been watching the coverage intently, and appreciates them. She also has a hearing loss- and they are a good deal easier for her to understand than many of the "talking heads".
Our military has done great with logistics, and it will only get better. I know that the UN mission is having a bad time, and I hope they aren't as jumpy and out of sorts all the time - like pulling the docs back from the tent hospital, and leaving them with a TV doc and his crew - who stepped up big.
Most of the Haitian people get props for paitence and grace - the profiteers who have "working" disasters down to a science, not so much.
Mr. Robertson, Mr. Scratch for you on line 2, in regards to your contract.....

It's a shame that he's screwed up healthcare, civil rights, Executive Branch commitment to rule of law, war, and banking. He's better than the alternative, and he still has time to do the right thing about health care... but he wont. And it will cost him support in '12.
