11. For some people the joke may be progress.
It means they've moved to the second stage of acceptance.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. - Mahatma Ghandi, In Philosophy"

The one thing I would alter to Ghandi's statement is that in this case; we all win.

9. I don't see the world uniting to do anything about global warming until it is too late
and then a half-assed job will be done in trying to deal with its consequences. I do think the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior and that does not bode well for planet Earth.

12. Nope. Even most DUers don't take it at all seriously. It rarely makes the top
five in terms of priorities for most on the Left. Pretty amazing, considering that not being about to grow food or breathe might make jobs, the economy, taxes and dozens of other "top issues" seem small by comparison. Is war a concern? Then how concerned will we all be when there's little food or fresh water to fight over?

10. All the usual cute, flippant remarks. So many DUERs will get their knickers in a twist
over a T-shirt or a bumper sticker, but climate change-something that can and does profoundly effect all like on earth- gets a half assed joke and a snicker. Such things make Freepers and fossil fuel execs smile.

14. Well, at 44 I am used to the climate changing
Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 06:56 PM by The Straight Story
And given that the earth has been around a really long time, and we have hot and cold periods, I don't see getting overly stressed that the climate is, yet again changing.

Go green? Sure - it can help us all, but I am not under the illusion that our species has so much control over climate that if we just change it will get all better.

The sun will die out someday.

Want to save humanity? More money for science and building spaceships, etc, and finding a way off this rock.

Cut emissions, do what we can to be sure - but overall the climate is not something we can control fully or even manage most the time.

Back in the 70's they told us a new ice age was coming, then it was warming, now it is 'change' - which covers pretty much everything when it comes to the climate.

I don't discount that we have an impact, but I sure don't think we are the main impact. And I don't want myself or others lulled into a false sense of security because we, in our arrogance, decided that we passed some laws and therefore all will be ok.

It won't be ok - and none of our species here can prevent it.

18. But we're already changing the climate with our industrial technology much faster
than most species; including our own can adapt, the trick now is to lessen our footprint in order to sustain life long enough for humanity to build those spaceships you speak of.

As for the 70s that was a small minority that believed in an ice age, carbon dioxide has been known to be a heat trapping gas for well over a hundred years.

19. The reason an ice shelf breaks off and becomes an iceberg
Ice builds up until it can no longer support its own weight. I guess that's one of the reasons they now call it climate change instead of global warming.

22. We should go green
and do all we can to avoid continuing to pollute our environment. Switching to alternative sources of energy would involve a massive effort that would create jobs, improve the economy, improve the environment, reduce our dependence on foreign resources, and keep our nation at the forefront of technological advances. What's not to love?

I don't think it would give anyone a false sense of security, but it would give us hope and an improved sense of community hopefully.

It would be nice to work on getting off planet though too. Who doesn't want to be an astronaut?

16. The scope of it is so big to so many people.
I think when people feel powerless, they give up and decide to do nothing. Or bask in ignorance. It is so much easier for them that way.
