Not your father's 4-H
Not your father's 4-H

Gloria Cundall was a member of the Good Luck 4-H Club in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her father was a founding member of the club in the 1930s. Cundall carried on the tradition started by her father by raising and showing cattle. But she also showed 4-H hogs, and learned to sew and decorate cakes through the program.

Now, Cundall is the club’s organization leader. She’s held the position for the past 20 years and says though the fundamentals of the organization stay the same, she’s also seen it adapt to the changing times.

“4-H has been beneficial to me and I see the good it does,” she said. “And I’ve really seen increased interest in the last few years.”

...

Some may have the idea that 4-H is just for farm kids, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth, Cundall said. There’s something to capture the interest of every child, she said. Through the organization, 4-H members have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills. The can learn how to cook, knit, improve their leadership skills by participating in fashion shows and speech contests, and practice visual arts such as photography, painting, ceramics and other arts and crafts.

1. Relief here.
Based on the subject line, I was expecting to read that wingnut crazies had taken over the 4-H and turned it into Limbaugh Youth.

4. Well shoot, I lived in a pretty big city in Massachusetts...
and I was a member of 4H back in the mid 1960s.

We didn't do the livestock thing, but we did sew and cook and stuff. Won a ribbon for a skirt I sewed.

:)

8. My Best in Show ribbon was for photography
I did all kinds of things: cooking, essays, showed my cat a few times. My sister's cat was a Reserve Grand Champion. She was so beautiful!

10. 4-H is awesome no matter where you live. I was a 4-Her and I have dozens of ribbons I won at the
county fair. I still enter every year in open class. Anyone can! It's great fun and I highly recommend it. I can brag about my blue-ribbon cakes and pies because they REALLY HAVE WON BLUE RIBBONS.

11. I think the fundies hate 4-H
Since 4-H is run through the county extension office and works in conjunction with the USDA, the churches can't take it over like they did Scouting. It is a good program.

Head, heart, hands, health.

It is a great organization. I belonged from age 9 to 19.

Every kid should participate.
