10,000 marchers, 4 arrests at immigration protest

Two men and two women were arrested during a march against the immigration methods of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Police said the men were arrested for striking a policewoman and her horse with a stick. They said one of the women was arrested for resisting arrest. No information was available on the charge against the other woman.

The four were said to be part of a disturbance that happened about an hour into the march, which attracted an estimated 10,000 protesters. Some walkers said they had to dodge about a dozen or so fellow marchers who were dressed in black and wearing bandanas.

A disturbance broke out Saturday afternoon during a protest of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration policies when a group of marchers allegedly threw water bottles and other items at police officers.

Lt. Pat Hofmann of the Phoenix Police Department says officers used pepper spray as they tried to separate protesters from an officer on horseback who was trying to take away the bottles and got crowded by the protesters.

6. .Arpaio, Thomas are abusing power

(no kidding) This is an article from December by Shiela Polk, the Yavapai County attorney.

"On April 1, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas requested that I take from him the criminal investigations and prosecutions involving members of Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

I agreed. For the next six months, I worked with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on the cases.

On Oct. 6, I returned all the matters to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, except the matters on appeal, and have had no further contact with either office on these matters. I was happy to remove myself from the cases and from contact with Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

My discomfort grew daily and my role in restraining potential abuses of power increasingly more difficult. It was a relief to package up the files and return them to Maricopa County.

Maricopa County is not my jurisdiction, but I can no longer sit by quietly and watch from a distance the abuses of power by Sheriff Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

In another article, EJ Montini, a writer for the Arizona Republic writes that ..."Polk is a law-and-order Republican with a solid reputation. In her column in The Republic, she says: "I am conservative and passionately believe in limited government, not the totalitarianism that is spreading before my eyes. The actions of Arpaio and Thomas are a disservice to the hundreds of dedicated men and women who work in their offices, and a threat to the entire criminal-justice system."

Maybe that's why the Sheriff's Office responded so quickly. Arpaio's chief deputy, David Hendershott, told reporters that Polk should be investigated by the FBI for hindering the Sheriff's Office's corruption investigations.

If another prosecutor, who won't play ball with Sheriff Joe, is threatened with investigation, we definitely have abuse of power. Many times I've started to write LTTE about him but didn't because of the possibility of being investigated and the legal fees that would result. This man uses Gestapo tactics.

7. There is WAY more wrong with this guy than just his immigration stance

That's just what he gets the most press for. I believe this is the same area where one of his sheriff's deputies illegally removed documents from a defense lawyers folders during a hearing INSIDE THE COURTHOUSE in full view of the judge and the courtroom cameras. Its amazing what they think passes for law enforcement in AZ, remind me to never move there.

Can someone back me up on that courtroom incident? I know it was in arizona, but I cant find th article or video now.

11. Arpaio is bad news on many levels

This is the same Joe who got his name for reinstilling the chain gangs, and making prisoners wear pink undies during work detail. While that might get a chuckle from some, it points to a disturbing mindset in Joe and his view of humanity and his society.

He better hope that none of those guys escape, because if they do, they may find the sheriff one day far off in the desert, tied upside down to a joshua tree and with his genitals in his mouth.
