24. Yes, absolutly.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark>

Jumping the shark is a metaphor that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed by a viewer to have passed its peak, or has introduced plot twists that are illogical in terms of everything that has preceded them. Once a show has "jumped the shark," the viewer senses noticeable decline in quality or feels the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm.

The term has also evolved to describe other areas of pop culture, including movie series, music, acting celebrities, or authors for whom a drastic change was seen as the beginning of the end....

Gates gives Iraqis a deadline
By David S. Cloud and Edward Wong Published: April 20, 2007

BAGHDAD: Defense Secretary Robert Gates gave the Iraqi government a deadline of late summer to pass measures long sought by the White House that are aimed at advancing reconciliation between the warring Sunni Arabs and Shiites.

37. McCain will claim he wasn't lying, based on actual deadlines being passed.
Daily Show exchange:
STEWART: Didn't Gates say... that the idea that we would set deadlines ... didn't he even say that has helped them put pressure on Maliki's government.

McCAIN: NO. What he has said was that we need to put pressure on the government, and the government is not functioning as we want it to.

What Gates said... (link)
The push by Democrats to set a timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq has been helpful in showing the Iraqis that American patience is limited, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday.

At the same time, Gates renewed his opposition to Congress actually approving any such timetable. Both the House and Senate have passed bills calling for an end to the war, and President Bush has said he will veto either version if it is given final approval.

"I've been pretty clear that I think the enactment of specific deadlines would be a bad mistake," Gates said.

"But I think the debate itself, and I think the strong feelings expressed in the Congress about the timetable ... probably has had a positive impact -- at least I hope it has in terms of communicating to the Iraqis that this is not an open-ended commitment," he said.

My opinion is that McCain lied -- or was just wrong -- since the bill has benchmarks, rather than arbitrary deadlines, and since Gates *did*, indeed, comment that the deadline/benchmarks debate may be helpful.

22. Wow. Just an amazing showdown. A standoff.
First, I want to thank Jon for not buring bridges.

But this is not going to be a simple ending for us. We're at war with the conservatives. They aren't going to back down. McCain wouldn't shut up, not because he had something to say, but because he was afraid we'd here the wrong thing.

29. I usually end up doing the same thing.
But McCain is so weak and powerless, I'm just not threatened by him. He's not going anywhere.

If that's the best he can do, they're in trouble. But I'm blown away at how little introspection they do. The total unwillingness to just step back and think.

I don't think McCain is all there. I sense occluded corotid arteries.

38. Stewart is far too deferential to McCain, given McCain's recent history.
Edited on Wed Apr-25-07 01:55 AM by krkaufman
Stewart should *not* have allowed McCain to filibuster and spew so much B-S, and should have immediately been at the ready to refute McCain's lie re: Gates saying deadlines may be helpful, as well as McCain lying regarding what the soldiers want.*

* i.e. Soldiers may believe in what they're doing, but they also want the hell out of Iraq, according to a poll conducted in Feb. 2006 -- and I can't imagine the troops are more eager to stay in Iraq now, a year-plus later.
(link) A first-ever survey of U.S. troops on the ground fighting a war overseas has revealed surprising findings, not the least of which is that an overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year.
If anyone has more recent poll results, I'd love to see 'em -- along with poll findings regarding Iraqi public opinion.

Edited on Tue Apr-24-07 11:36 PM by Up2Late
...that there is No way in Hell the country is going to elect a Republican President in 2008, because of the way the Bush's and his Cabal have screwed things up so bad and I think he's beginning to see that 2000 was his last best shot at being President.

He's 70 right now and in 2008 he'll be 72, which would make him Older than Reagan was when he first got elected.

I bet he knows now that 2012 is probably not going to happen either and in 2016, I bet Jeb runs and he would be 80 then too.

He knows the dream is over, so why not pander to everyone in his last ditch effort.
