Tim Tebow and his mother to be featured in Super Bowl ad

If you're one of those people that was just so sure Tim Tebow would vanish into obscurity once his Florida football career was over, I've got bad news for you.

Tebow's not going away anytime soon, it appears.

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and his mother, Pam, will be featured in a 30-second Super Bowl ad for Focus on the Family - the first Super Bowl ad in the group's history. The Super Bowl will be televised live on CBS, Feb. 7, from Miami.

The mother and son will share a personal story in the 30-second spot from the international family-help organization, which will focus on the theme "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life."

"Tim and Pam share our respect for life and our passion for helping families thrive," said Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family. "They live what we see every day - that the desire for family closeness is written on the hearts of every generation. Focus on the Family is about nurturing that desire and strengthening families by empowering them with the tools they need to live lives rooted in morals and values."

The organization said all funds to air the ad came from a small group of "very generous and committed friends" who donated specifically to support the project. No money from the ministry's general fund was used.

The online version differs from the print version.

In the print version, it's an anti-abortion ad. The personal story they want to share with us was her decision not to get an abortion, when her doctor recommended it due to a difficult pregnancy. Voila! We have Timmeh.

The networks won't take an antiwar ad, but they'll let Focus on the Family buy airtime at 2.5-2.8 million for a 30 second ad?

Fuck 'em. I'm boycotting it this year.

3. So Long Tebow
I'm a Gator by marriage and I adore Tim Tebow. Even though I'm a confirmed agnostic, I respect his religious views because he seemed to walk the walk and didn't use a heavy hand trying to impose it on others. I even think the eye-blacks were a cute and creative way to proselytize.

Certainly he is free to promote or support whatever message he chooses with whomever he chooses. I'm not sure I like this "blackmail" of stars or their sponsors for sharing "controversial" opinions or taking a political stance. Logically, I can understand the Tebows' motivation for being "Pro-Life."

But if he does this ad for Focus on the Family, I will likely associate him with sexism and bigotry because that is how I view FotF. Maybe it's inaccurate. Maybe it's unfair. I kind of liked Tony Dungy for his accomplishments, but when I saw the billboard with him promoting the "Family First" license plate it made me feel sick. Reading about this is upsetting enough. If I see Tebow's face and "Focus on the Family" it will turn my stomach and I won't be able to look at him again without thinking of discrimination.

Live and Let Live, I guess. Once that's gone...

4. The eye blacks were a way
to shove his religious beliefs in the faces of a lot of people in a very insidious way. Is he free to do that? Yes, but it's a pretty arrogant expression of freedom when only Christians can do so. What do you think would have been the reaction if some other player had put "Allahu Akbar", or "There is no God" in their eye blacks? Supposedly they should be just as free to express their views that way, but they'd be smacked down hard and fast.

8. I stopped watching the Stupid Bowl years ago because of all the ads

It got to be where there was 3 minutes of football and 7 minutes of advertisements.

I now read about the game online after it's over.

12. The ads are WHY you watch the Super Bowl
The problem with the Super Bowl is it's the biggest game of the year and it comes at the end of the season--meaning by the time the teams get there, they're used up.

A certain sport DUers love to hate does it a different way: their big party is at the start of the season when everyone's still got money and equipment.

9. Focus on the Family
have leadership that would rather engage in evil nonsense like wishing for "abundant rain, torrential rain. Urban and small stream flood advisory rain. I know, you might ask, why would I pray for that? Well, I'm still pro-life. And I'm still in favor of marriage being only between one man and one woman. And I'd like the next President, who will select justices for the U.S. Supreme Court, to agree. If God decides that rain of biblical proportions would be a good and proper meteorological condition for that evening, we'll see it, and we'll say that it is good."

:eyes:

They are evil.

11. " a passion for helping families thrive"
So I guess Tebow is going to give away his NFL paycheck to families in need. Or are they going to speak up for single payer healthcare, which would help families thrive greatly. Or raising minimum wage, keeping jobs from leaving the country, better public education.
