15. Actually the headline in your link reads
Looter Killed & Burned by Haitian mob as Police Watch

the question then is was he burned alive or was he killed by the mob and then burned as bodies are now being burned

http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/haiti/2010/01/15/12483586.html

in any event that the Haitian police turned him over to a mob is an indication that Haiti is in chaos

"The New York Times said “the police brought a man to Pétionville in the back of a pickup and informed a gathering crowd that he had been caught looting in another neighborhood, witnesses said. While the police officers stood by, an angry mob pulled the man from the truck.

The mob stripped the accused looter, then began beating him. They dragged him up the street while pummeling him, then threw him on a trash heap, where he lay vomiting and bleeding.

One man began piling trash on top of him and set it on fire.
As the firelight flickered on an art gallery and a church on opposite sides of the street, dozens gathered to watch the man burn to death.

He was alive and vomiting and bleeding when they lit him on fire to watch him BURN TO DEATH.

12. From what I've read, we can hardly rely on the Haitian police to be "just" - nor is this "justice"
I am not sure what you meant by your post and I'm not attacking you - for all I know you are being ironic, I give you the benefit of the doubt.

We have no idea for sure that this was really even a "looter" and not some sort of revenge/retaliation. We also don't know if the man was "looting" for water or scraps of food. And even if he were acting for himself alone, trying to survive at the expense of others, even children, or seeking things to sell purely for gain, surely beating a man near to death and then incinerating him the rest of the way is not "justice" as we define it in civilized countries?

Did you read the story at the second link? It says that the "police" brought this man in the back of a truck and basically served him up to the angry gathering mob. Told them that this guy had been "looting" in another neighborhood.

What police? I had heard that the Haiti police were nonexistent.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 02:00 PM by FedUpWithIt All
Read the article. They punished this man to show that they will not tolerate the looters that they think ARE SCARING AID WORKERS.

The slow and cautious is what caused this. People are now desperate. It is a travesty and it is only going to get worse.

14. No it is not... you think crowds do not go nuts
even in regular times? They do... look at a mall for early morning specials on Black Friday.

I know people do not want to see this, but humans can and do get nasty. And this has nothing to do with melanin content, or language spoken.

Now that they have enough troops to start moving in, they will.

Yes they said they had thousands of troops... well now they can start going up in tempo.

And you laugh, but that emphasis in security... comes from people actually dying trying to deliver aid in disasters... well intentioned, but dumb.

Or did you miss the two freelancers from the Dominican Republic who were shot yesterday? To me it was a reminder of why that security is such a necessity.

35. Well in this case...
Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 04:51 PM by FedUpWithIt All
the crowds did not get nasty until they went for more than 4 days without life giving necessities.

Edited to add that even after 4 days the majority stood calmly and patiently for food and water they desperately needed. Perhaps you underestimate the people who are actually watching their loved ones die.

I wonder how patient many here would be if forced to wait for LIFE SAVING water for their children. People cannot even be civil and patient on damned message boards.

A life is a life is a life is a life...whether it be an aid worker or an old man under some rubble. People would do well to remember this.

and here is your free clue of the day... why do you think reporters pulled back to the airport at sundown every night?

They are mostly isolated... but they have been happening.

And let me ask you this... let's assume I went down there as a freelancer... out of the goodness of my heart... I am a trained paramedic. Forget about my family, but what good can I do if I am dead?

Yes that is the real calculus in insert disaster here. Not that my life is more valuable than yours, but protecting my skills at this moment is important so I can do some good.

24. Many DUers screaming that people will be nice and orderly are clueless
even when the lights go out in NYC things deteriorate and lawlessness kicks in - let alone with the current desperation in Haiti. It amazes me how many DUers think everyone will politely share any resource dropped and will only steal from the wealthy and not just someone weaker than themselves.

27. Mostly they have never been in a crisis situation
and I wish them to remain to be clueless!!! To a point

During the great blackout I was in Cleveland visiting for a family event. Lights go out, I took out the portable I always travel with. It took me two minutes to realize this was not just local. And another five to get sis, BIL and my husband in car on the way to get batteries, water, flashlights and a few other essentials...

As they say, training kicked in and it became how do I keep my nephew, still a baby, my parents and a few others relatively safe.

So we got to the store well ahead of the locals and the locals looked at us a crazy tourists... well we had water, clean water, food and batteries. Other hotel guests did not.

Then we had another problem... sanitary. Flushing toilets... they could not get water up. pumps... so we ended telling the hotel how to deal with that... POOL water and carts....

37. In general people don't, and that is the challenge of
emergency managers... that people in general do not have any idea how to survive in a crisis, and bless their hearts, they make assumptions about human nature.

The other reality is that most people have an attitude that this cannot happen to me.

I am happy you do by the way...

Keep it up.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 02:37 PM by nadinbrzezinski
this is a movie or a conspiracy.

Reach for your degree....

Let me add a little about the middle class lives. Anderson Cooper said something very revealing about the mindset... he did not honestly realize that a compound fracture could kill in 72 hours from generalized sepsis. Think about it... you got one, you go to the trauma center, they clean it in the OR and pump you full of antibiotics... chances are, in a well equipped hospital it is a serious injury, but highly survivable.

I have dealt with some people who turned very violent although you would not know just by looking at them. All races, both sexes, different ages. You never know how people will react in a difficult situation. I even worked with troubled boys. Restraining a strong 12 year old is harder then it looks.

54. I've been told since I was kid, NG will shoot to kill looters
This was standard stuff for the hurricane prone gulf coast through the 60's and 70's when I was growing up.

Looters can be shot on sight.

Not something I ever intend to test. We do what I was taught and stock up food and water for at least 2 weeks and haven't had an issue. We were also always taught from the 60's as kids, that relief would take a week or two to arrive and start feeding us and providing water.

Why people think it can always happen in a day or two is beyond me.
