Ideas about UNRECOMMEND.
Since its inception, the Unrecommend Button seems to have caused somewhat of a stir here at DU.

I personally have accidentally pressed it when meaning to Recommend a thread, only to find that I can't "undo" the Unrecommend & change to Recommend. I suspect I'm not alone in this. I would like to see the ability to cancel & "do over" added to this feature.

I also feel it would be much more beneficial for 3 numbers to show:
1) # of Recommends
2) # of Unrecommeds
3) # representing the balance of the two (what actually shows now)

What do you think about these ideas?

17. No, this issue has already been discussed to death and has been settled on.
It is here and it's a good idea. Deserving threads make it to the greatest page. Rec/UnRec is overrated anyways since they are only good for 24 hours. Kicking a thread is what is important and UnRec has no effect on that at all.

40. Only if you require Rec to show their name as well. Fair is fair.
How about posts that say, "Obama should be impeached" or "Dennis Kucinich sucks"? Would simply ignoring them be good enough? If you respond to the thread that is actually better than an UnRec because it will kick it to the top of its forum. Without UnRec the freeper-trolls could easily muster the 5 votes needed to move such threads to the Greatest page.

This has all been discussed to death in the past and unless there is some dramatic change, UnRec is here to stay and it is just as valid a way of expressing a point of view as Rec.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 06:03 PM by jgraz
It was changed almost immediately because almost every thread seemed to devolve into a flame war over recs and unrecs.

BTW, I think I still hold the record for most unrecs while unrec counts were displayed (yes, it was a thread about unrecs).

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 04:32 PM by itsrobert
I never go to the "Greatest Page". The post is still there, "unrecommend" does not remove them. The only reason why some are concern about the "rec/unrec" voting are motivated by ego. If you need your ego stroke go out and do something productive. I have pity on those who's main goal in life is make the "greatest page" so they can stroke their egos.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 04:39 PM by Uncle Joe
You could still require a 5+ rec vote margin to make the page.

I see the current system of taking the peoples' rec/votes away from them as distorting the main forum, this symbol <0 is applied evenhandedly to a thread with 100 unrecs and 0 recs as a thread with 105 unrecs and 100 recs.

With this symbol of <0 you can't tell except on rare occasions whether your rec or unrec vote was counted because their is no visibility.

29. I think that's a 'mercy rule'
Unrec wasn't introduced to make it obvious what many DUers really hate; it was to improve the quality of threads on the Greatest page, by making a difference between "I haven't even seen this thread" and "I have read this OP, and I think it is poor". Admin has decided that the '<0' is suficient to let people know the thread is not well received. If a full count of the unrecs was shown, some DUers would be unrecing just to make it known "lots of people really hate this thread/poster". Unfortunate, but there are DUers childish enough to do that.

Threads that do have 105 unrecs and 100 recs tend to show up in the "very close" list in the 'alternative top 10'.

24. Sounds good to me
I have posted a couple threads lately and they get unrecommended after other people have recommnded them. I'm honestly baffled why they seem to get the unrec's . They are not really controversial and are politely worded. *shrug*

With this idea we could see how many rec's we truly get before and after the "unrecommend" squad shows up.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 04:55 PM by southerncrone
For any Recs this thread got, those who think it's cute to Unrec any thing about the Unrec thread have negated any Recs, simply because.

I know there are trolls & immature characters on DU that engage in this type of behavior all too often.

AND I AGREE......WHY DO WE EVEN NEED THE UNRECOMMEND OPTION!

But if we are stuck w/it, just trying to make it reflective of what is happening. I also like the idea of having the Unrecs to show their name & give reason why. This might actually bring back discussion to DU again.

Edited to fix HTML.

31. I have to agree...unrec needs to go
It seems to only cause hard feelings and conflict, I really don't understand the purpose of the unrec feature. It is a purely negative vote, why not have only positive votes for threads. If you don't like a thread then you don't vote for it by recommending it, I don't see what the problem with that could be.

34. giving the reason why rather defeats the point
because it would kick the thread, thus giving a thread the unreccer dislikes more visibility.

Making the names of the reccers and unreccers known might be more open, but would probably increase the sense of 'fights' on DU. For the actual purpose of rec and unrec (ie constructing a Greatest Page for DU, based on the collective wisdom of the members), the present system works better than the alternatives suggested so far, IMO. For other purposes (eg personal feedback), it doesn't work well.

36. Actually, it doesn't do much.
It mostly keeps threads that shouldn't belong on the Greatest page away from the Greatest page. Of course, these threads don't vanish, they're still there to enjoy and discuss, and only because they're not on the Greatest page doesn't mean they're not worthy. But there might be dupe threads, the same picture/cartoon posted over and over, and so forth.

Of course it'll get abused. What irks me is that no one ever seemed to have started a thread that the 'recommendation' button get abused - and it gets it as well. Before the unrecommend button, you just needed five friends of yours to have anything you ever posted on the Greatest page. No matter what.

Now, this isn't that easy to achieve anymore. Of course, everyone thinks that as soon as the 'Post message' button is hit, it should show up on Greatest. Now, we have a democratic tool that prevents this from happening, and it's a good tool. Otherwise, enable the Lounge for the Greatest page and you won't see any thread there from other forums anymore.

As I said, it gets abused. So does the 'recommend' button. That's how it goes. But it's way better than it was before. :hi:

1). Lurking freeps to unrecommend threads they don't like

2). DUers who don't like other DUers to unrecommend threads by those DUers

Other than that, it sucks tailpipe. On the order of Moses parting the Red effin' Sea. That's how much this "enhancement" sucks.

would be if Skinner suddenly activated a feature that showed how many threads an individual has unrec'd in the last hour. I think it would go like this:

replier 2: Looks like you might have!

Obviously, not everyone who un-recs a thread is a troll - but it does allow them to respond without verbally identifying themselves. Some of the threads that get un-rec'd around here are simply stunning.
