Tim Tebow to appear in Focus on the Family ad during the Super Bowl
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/superbowl/story/12795181/christian-group-pays-for-super-bowl-ad-featuring-tebow-mom

<snip>
The former Florida quarterback and his mother will appear in a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl next month. The Christian group Focus on the Family says the Tebows will share a personal story centering on the theme "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life."

The group isn't releasing details, but the commercial is likely to be an anti-abortion message chronicling Pam Tebow's 1987 pregnancy. After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child and gave birth to Tim.
<snip>

How ironic. His mother had a CHOICE.

It's sickening to see that the NFL will allow a group known for its bigotry to air an ad during the Super Bowl, especially considering how they've turned down ads from other groups that they consider controversial or offensive. Nice to see just where the NFL's priorities lie.

1. That's right she had a Choice!
Would she prefer the government take that choice away from other women? I also think that if the NFL is going to allow this ad they should have one from Planned Parenthood.

3. Yeah, I know they allow these displays of public piety,
eg group prayers on the field after the game, which by the version of conservative Christianity in which I was raised is considered blasphemy. So I wonder if they'd allow Wiccans equal time?

7. I'm sure the admonitions against public piety will be removed from the conservative Bible project..
After all, conservatives know what God *really* meant to say, right?

It's going to be interesting to see what the Gospels look like after the conservatives get done fixing them.

9. Conservative Bible project? You mean they're going to go back to the Aramaic version?
It's about time. King James was gay you know.

10. Read it and weep..
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/05/conservative-bible-projec_n_310037.html

Lo and behold, the Bible has gotten too liberal, according to a group of conservatives. And it needs a little editing.

That's the inspiration behind the Conservative Bible Project, which seeks to take the text back to its supposed right-wing roots.

Yes, even scripture is not orthodox enough for the modern conservative. Not that it's the fault of the author(s), exactly. The group cites a few reasons why the Bible is too progressive: "Lack of precision in the original language ... lack of precision in modern language" and "translation bias in converting the original language to the modern one."

So how can the Bible be conservatized? The group has proposed a Wikipedia-like group editing project. Some of the ideas would only bring the translation closer to the original. But others would fundamentally change the text.

11. Awww sweet! I've had fantasies about the Book of Leviticus and imposing
that kind of morality on the fundies.

12. One can only imagine what a Fred Phelps Bible would look like
I don't think you could even quote it without violating DU rules.

5. Here's hoping that Tebow goes where all rookie quarterbacks go to die
Detroit, Cleveland, or Oakland.

6. I'll Be Taking A Dump...
First, who cares who Tim Tebow is...we surely don't here in the Midwest.

Good...let them waste all that money...better than going to buy off politicians or fund anti-GMA activities. To me, like most Super Bowl commercials, it's a waste and big ego stroke. Most people are there to see the game and when the commercials come on, they're zapping or off to the kitchen. Seems like the only people who care about the commercials are the corporate media...and yes, I suspect the reason for putting it on the game was to milk a lot of free time on the cables. But to what effect?

Here's hoping the game is a blow-out...most the audience will be gone by the time the ad runs and it's even a bigger waste.

8. I hate him and his ilk.
Religious people are the biggest dopes and hypocrites ever. I will boycott the Super Bowl if this propaganda is allowed to be aired.

13. That's going to be about as effective as anti-pot commercials on Adult Swim.
