5. Yeah they have been there since thursday
and this is the Context CNN will not provide.

That rescue team deploys with a hospital... every time.

And they are not the only ones with a hospital though. So does the ICRC.

Of course CNN is ignoring the Vinson... with a hell of a medbay, and the Bataan...

Or the fact the Comfort is in the way, or the fact that the MAR Huasteco should be there by tomorrow.

11. Yup
The U.S. military is already there and up now.

CNN ran a story this morning that their own doctor Gupta was doing neuro surgery on a kid on board the Vinson this morning.

And that a large hospital ship was almost there.

I posted a link for you about that yesterday. The Comfort isn't there and won't be until Wednesday. And from what I understand the Israeli facility is the only one set up for complex surgeries.

18. Not true. Sanjay Gupta performed brain surgery last night on the Vinson
They are only taking the most extreme cases, so the volume isn't as high as one would wish, but they are doing a bit of care on the Vinson.

I'd rather they treat 10 than none at all. Once more ships are on scene, they will take more.

Gupta operated on a 12 year old Haitian girl with concrete literally in her brain. He said the operation went well and she should be OK.

27. That's strange.
I've been watching CNN since the earthquake happened, and I've seen several items about the Vison, Comfort, etc. In fact, Sanjay Gupta did brain surgery on a child on the Vinson last night, and CNN showed the Comfort leaving port in MD, then went on the discuss their capabilities, reasons why it didn't leave immediately.

There's an international brouhaha brewing over the US not allowing other countries equal
access to land. France and Brazil have filed a complaint with the DoD and France is
asking that the US clarify it's position.

24. The harsh truth is that there is no country in this hemisphere,
probably on the planet, that handles disasters better than Cuba.
The rest of the world borrows from th eCuban disaster model.
Note in that article that:
The quake was felt in Cuba's most eastern provinces, particularly the old city of Baracoa. There was no damage, but miraculously in just one hour, 50,000 people were evacuated to high land for fear of a tsunami. Fortunately it did not materialize. Nonetheless, it was a remarkable feat of logistics. But once the Cuban Seismology Institute and Civil Defense determined there was no danger, the evacuees were returned home to resume their daily lives.

That's known as higher level community organizations - people power.

They aren't too scared to actually go in among the people.

The search crews weren't too scared either. But yet, the other doctors and relief workers were talking riots way before there was a problem.

If they're so scared, why are they in these positions? That's what I don't understand. Why be there at all? Let someone else do it, who is willing to DO IT. And get the hell out of the way!

This could've been done better. And if those in charge of planning for this kind of thing can't see that, they need to be replaced too.

I should have been more circumspect.

I think what's happening is there are a lot of good doctors and nurses but they lack the tools and facilities to help people. If I have an infection or a gangrenous limb there's not much a doctor can do for me if he doesn't have tools, meds, or a facility to operate in.

Yes, it's a travesty that people are dieing and I believe, just like you, that the number of people that will die due to inaccessibility of aid will be large.

But there are thousands who have been treated and will have a second chance at life thanks to the care of dedicated individuals who are down there doing what they can.

46. Did anybody say *nothing* was being done? That is not the point.
Of course people are being treated. They're being treated with what little is available, mostly by people who are/were already on the ground, with what happened to be onhand.

Duh. Of course those who could, did what they could, with what they had.

It's "care" such as amputations being done on the street with local anaesthetic and whiskey - due to lack of supplies coming in, that's the point.

There are many people from many different countries on the ground - including American volunteers and American soldiers.

There are field hospitals - some primitive - that have been opened by doctors and nurses from all over - including Americans. But they are helping the people in the best capacity that they can.

No one is scared to get out amongst the people because that's what they are there to do.

34. That's true. Perhaps they will start getting what they need soon
I saw one report where the field hospital received blood pressure cuffs with no inflation device and open heart surgery gear. They needed the cuffs, but they are useless without the inflation bulb and there is no need for open heart surgery gear in a field hospital for obvious reasons.

I think the reason why we are seeing a lot of these reports is because of the massive area of destruction that the earthquake caused. With 3 million people in the city, there's just so much space and so many people that it's overwhelmed what response that was initially available.

why?

This happens all the time... somebody did not check the packet or most likely another site got the bulbs, and no cuffs.

As to the Thoracic Surgery kits... again that happens all the time, unfortunately somebody saw this as an opportunity to empty old stock... don't care if it's useful or not.

The units which were already there aren't getting any supplies, and the outside supplied teams aren't going in. The Israelis are. So good for them. And it's largely because they aren't scared.

Period. That's the conclusion I draw, and I'm just as informed as you.

43. It has nothing to do with being "Scared" - they were better prepared and able to get on the ground
I think we are arguing semantics here, but I think the characterization of certain parties being "scared" is off-base. I'm sure if we had a mobile field hospital like that (I'm sure we do - and it's most likely deployed in Afghanistan or Iraq), it would be on the ground as well.

Doctors Without Borders is bringing in mobile hospitals and some are already on the ground. I don't think these people are scared, because they've been there from the beginning.

It couldn't get in through the airport.

And as to scared... leaving countless patients in the dark because of worry over some disturbance which hadn't happened=SCARED. That's scared, ok?

Or would you like to debate that some more? Just how much does it take? How much argument does it take, to make one legitimate point around here?

Scared, scared, scared, they were f'ing scared. There's no other way to paint that.

Is that ok with you now?
