I am going to try one more time. I know that I’ve said some of this before but I’ve not said all of it and I’ve also not said it all in one place. I ask you to please take the time to read the whole post. I wrote it from my heart and from experiences I’ve had on the ground here in MA since things started going bad.
There is a lesson to be learned from this Massachusetts race and the lesson is not really about Martha Coakley’s bad campaigning.
No one will ever argue that Martha Coakley is a great campaigner. She is not. But, campaigning style has LITTLE to do with the pickle she finds herself in. If it were a different state or a nation wide campaign maybe it would make a big difference.
The reason I say her style has little to do with anything is because this is a Massachusetts State race. We don’t mind bad campaigners here. We select both good and bad campaigners in MA all the time. One example, in the primary Coakley was up against Capuano, a good campaigner. She, the bad campaigner, beat him 47% to his 28%.
Here in Massachusetts both Dems and Independents liked Martha’s campaigning style well enough to elect her our Attorney General.
Remember, we’ve elected John Kerry as our Senator numerous times since 1984. And before that we had elected him Lieutenant Governor.
How about Dukakis? Remember him? Just take a good look at MA’s record on how we have chosen our candidates in the past. We quite obviously don’t have a problem with wonkish, dull or bad campaigning.
Martha Coakley was doing just fine until after her primary win, when she was forced to flip her position on HCR. That flip gave the opening to the Republicans. Republicans became the only game in town that was against this highly unpopular HCR bill. That flip is what put Republicans in the drivers seat. This bill was unwanted by Republicans and some Independents. It offered too little for Dems and other Independents who wanted a single payer system or in the least a robust public option. What a mess trying to take the middle of the road on healthcare has made.
The Democratic machine that forced Martha to flip before she had won this election is what has caused this race to be so close. It screwed Coakley and greased the skids for Brown.
If this bill costs us our majority in the midterms and if others try to tell you it’s the HCR bill, what excuses will you find then? How will you cover for this bill then? Will it be too late if we don’t learn the lesson being taught in Massachusetts right now?
Will it be too frickin late????
I hope with all my heart it’s not too late for us in MA tomorrow.
So if you are a registered voter in Massachusetts, I beg you to go out and vote for Martha tomorrow. Please don’t teach any lessons to the Democratic Establishment with this race. I hear your anger but please don’t take it out on Martha, don’t use her to teach your lesson. She WAS against this bill just like some of you. It is not her fault and all us Bay Staters will pay the price if she doesn’t win. I hate this bill but I will not cut off my nose to spite my face. Think about it, please.
Go Martha!
