Crap... One Dead From Pacific Storms...
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 10:38 PM by WillyT

<snip>

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A Pine Mountain Club man died Monday morning when strong winds blew a 100-foot tree into his house.

What was expected to be a stormy week in California began with blown down trees, crashes, flooded streets and power outages throughout Kern County.

Devin Storz, the 21-year-old Pine Mountain Club man, was asleep in his bed when the tree crashed into his home on Freeman Drive, according to the Kern County Coroner's office. He died at the scene.

Winds in the valley were gusting to 30 mph, while winds in the mountains reached twice that speed.

There were numerous reports of trees blowing over and blocking roads or damaging property.

1. So the driver of the red VW is NOT dead?
Probably should consider him or herself very lucky. Most cars that go under trucks meet with more tragic results. Too bad about the guy in the house, but he probably literally never knew what hit him. I suppose if you gotta go in such a violent way, it's better not to fear it or see it coming :evilfrown:

But I'll be damned if I know how the weather threw a full sized pickup truck over a concrete barrier. :wtf:

Sunday wasn't as bad as feared here, but other areas got pounded. We started with the pounding here in earnest at dawn and it continued to about 1PM. That will be the pattern, rain in 1st half of day, clearing in the PM. All week long. Up to 20" of rain this week here in Nor Cal:

Storm knocks out power to thousands
Kevin Fagan, Chronicle Staff Writer

Monday, January 18, 2010

(01-18) 18:29 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Rain, hail, thunder and stiff gusts of wind paraded through the Bay Area on Monday, knocking out power to thousands of people and forcing an airliner into an emergency landing - and that was just a taste of what's to come, emergency officials said.

The outages to 51,000 customers, most of them in the North Bay and on the Peninsula, could seem like a small total if wind predictions hold true for storms due in Wednesday and Thursday that also threaten to flood low-lying city streets.

"For us, this week is an all-hands-on-deck situation," said Joe Molica, a spokesman for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. "We're assigning crews as quickly as we can, but they'll definitely be working all day and through the night."

By evening, PG&E crews had gotten the power back for all but 2,600 customers in the Half Moon Bay and Woodside areas, Molica said...
