Jay Leno: In 2004, NBC Didnt Think I Could Hold Onto the #1 Spot
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 10:46 PM by MadBadger
Transcript from his show tonight making a statement on this whole fiasco.

"I thought maybe I should address this. At least give you my view of what has been going on here at NBC. Oh, let’s start in 2004. 2004 I’m sitting in my office, an NBC executive comes in and says to me, listen, Conan O’Brien has gotten offers from other networks. We don’t want him to go, so we’re going to give him ‘The Tonight Show.’ I said, ‘well, I’ve been number one for 12 years.’ They said, ‘we know that, but we don’t think you can sustain that.’ I said, ‘okay. How about until I fall to number two, then you fire me?’ ‘No, we made this decision.’ I said, ‘that’s fine.’ Don’t blame Conan O’Brien. Nice guy, good family guy, great guy. He and I have talked and not a problem since then. That’s what managers and people do, they try to get something for their clients. I said, ‘I’ll retire just to avoid what happened the last time.’ Okay.

So time goes by and we stay number one up until the day we leave. We hand – (applause)-No, no. Okay, but I’m leaving before my contract is out. About six to eight months early. So before I could go anywhere else, I would be at least a year or 18 months before I could go and do a show somewhere else. I said to NBC, ‘would you release me from my contract.’ They said, ‘we want to keep you here.’ Okay. What are your ideas? They said, ‘how about primetime?’ I said, ‘that will never work.’ No, no, we want to put you on at 10:00. We have done focus groups. People will love you at 10:00. Look at these studies showing Jay’s chin at 10:00. People will go crazy. Didn’t seem like a good idea at the time. I said, ‘alright, can I keep my staff?’ There are 175 people that work here. I said, ‘can I keep my staff?’ Yes, you can. Let’s try it. We guarantee you two years on the air, guaranteed. Now for the first four or five months against original shows like “CSI” you’ll get killed, but in the spring and summer when the reruns come, that’s when you’ll pick up. Okay, great. I agree to that.

Four months go by, we don’t make it. Meanwhile, Conan’s show during the summer, we’re not on, was not doing well. The great hope was that we would help him. Well, we didn’t help him any, okay. They come and go, ‘this show isn’t working. We want to let you go.’ Can you let me out of my contract? No, you’re still a valuable asset to this company. How valuable can I be? You fired me twice. How valuable can I be? Okay. So then, the affiliates are not happy. The affiliates are the ones that own the TV stations. They’re the ones that sort of makes the decisions, they’re not happy with your performance and Conan is not doing well at 11:30. I said, ‘what’s your idea?’ They said, ‘well, look, how about you do a half hour show at 11:30?’ Now, where I come from, when your boss gives you a job and you don’t do it well, I think we did a good job here, but we didn’t’ get the ratings, so you get humbled. I said, ‘okay, I’m not crazy about doing a half hour, but okay. What do you want to do with Conan?’ We’ll put him on at midnight, or 12:05, keeps “The Tonight Show” does all that, he gets the whole hour. I said, okay. You think Conan will go for that? Yes, yes. (laughter) Almost guarantee you. I said okay. Shake hands, that’s it. I don’t have a manager, I don’t have an agent, that’s my handshake deal.

Next thing I see Conan has a story in the paper saying he doesn’t want to do that. They come back to me and they say if he decides to walk and doesn’t want to do it, do you want the show back? I go, ‘yeah, I’ll take the show back. If that’s what he wants to do. This way, we keep our people working, fine.’ So that’s pretty much where we are. It looks like we might be back at 11:30, I’m not sure. I don’t know. (applause) I don’t know. But through all of this – through all of this, Conan O’Brien has been a gentleman. He’s a good guy. I have no animosity towards him. This is all business. If you don’t get the ratings, they take you off the air. I think you know this town, you can do almost anything. You get ratings they keep you. I don’t get ratings, he wants. That was NBC’s solution. It didn’t work so we might have an answer for you tomorrow. So, we’ll see. That’s basically where it is."

Believe it or not, doesnt matter. I believe it because his story seems to match his actions and that of the network.

1. One reason it's believable to me...
...is that, when he announced his move to 10 P.M. on the Tonight Show last year, he pretty much had the same skeptical tone: "I don't know if it'll work -- we'll see." It struck me as a bit downbeat instead of the "here's this great thing we're doing" tone I'd have expected. So now, when he says he was dubious about the whole thing, it rings true.

2. And despite the fact that just like he said they DID fire him twice...
He still took the job.

Jay doesn't just want the Tonight Show...he COVETS it.

1992 and 2010, same thing all over again.

What a no class, low class weasel.

3. Why does wanting to keep his job make him a "no class, low class weasel"?
I truly don't understand your reasoning -- he was #1 in ratings for 12 years and management decided to mess with that.

BTW, I don't watch any of the late-night guys any more, except occasionally Craig Ferguson.

4. And? If he covets it, why exactly should he give it up when it's
been offered to him?
He never wanted to give the show up to Conan in the first place.
Why exactly should he think of Conan instead of himself? I don't think Conan donated him a kidney or something.
Most people would take a job they want when offered, rather than giving it up so some other guy can have it.

13. Jay spent five minutes explaining how much and how often...
...NBC had dicked him over. They dicked Conan over too but at least Conan told them to take their demotion and stick it somewhere. Now they're buying him out. If Jay had just said buy me out too, I'm outta here...both guys could have looked good while NBC would have looked even worse than they do now.

Just my opinion...

5. I find it hard to believe Jay Leno doesn't have an agent or manager.
He may not be with an agency--might have just a personal manager--but to say he doesn't have anyone looking after his business interests so he can concentrate on creative output just strains credulity.

That said, I've gotten surprisingly ugly feedback here on DU pointing out that his ratings were simply better than Conan's in the 11:30/10:30 time slot. Regardless of how much DUers might prefer Conan's style of humor to Leno's, the ratings numbers pretty much trump everything else. Why people get so passionate about one millionaire over another one I'll never understand.

7. He's in for a rude awakening.
He may be able to hang on to older viewers, but he's completely made an asshole of himself to younger viewers-the viewers that Conan usually won.

9. "This way, we keep our people working."
Jay Leno is a stand-up guy for wanting to keep his people's jobs. He trounced Letterman in the ratings from 1995 to 2009. Conan tried his best but was soundly beaten by Letterman. This is a business- if you don't deliver, you get taken off the air. I don't really get the animosity of many DUers towards Leno. If my company fired me, and then a few months later wanted to bring me back because my replacement wasn't up to the job, does that make *me* the bad guy?

17. Half a rating point is not trouced.
This is the fiction that NBC and Leno have been pushing for years. If Leno was trouncing Letterman all these years, CBS would have canceled his show. Leno never beat Letterman by more than half a ratings point, plus Letterman's demographics were always better than Leno which is why CBS can charge more for advertising.

And Conan wasn't being soundly beaten by Letterman. The industry expected a fall off in ratings for the Tonight Show after the change over. The same thing happened in '92 when Leno took over and it took him 3 years to make the show a hit (which was aided by CBS losing affiliates in several key markets due to NFC football going to FOX). However in the 3rd Quarter, Conan was competitive with Dave in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34. And don't forget that Conan's show suffered due to the poor lead-in caused by Leno's show at 10PM. On average NBC affiliates had a 30% drop off in the ratings for their late local news. That had a bad effect on Conan's show.

Remember not one affiliate demanded or even politely asked that Conan's show be canceled. They demanded that Leno's show be taken off the air. Now Conan is being made to pay for NBC's and Leno's failure. That is just not fair.

11. We can all agree that the real A-holes here are NBC but Jay should take
it out on them rather than on Conan. He should be the one moving to a different network to try to get back at them - like a "ha ha, I DO still have it and can easily beat you all in the ratings."

Conan's getting the short end of the stick here, they tell him in 2004 he can have the tonight show....then in 2009 when he's getting ready to take over the Tonight Show, the A-holes at NBC tell him they're going to sabotage his show by putting Jay on from 9:00-10:00 with the same format he's been using for years to try to get the "Tonight Show" audience to watch him earlier rather than to give Conan a shot in the normal time slot.

That would be like taking Steve Carell (sp?) and the whole cast from The Office off of The Office and putting them on a new show called "Cubicles" and running it an hour before the new The Office with a whole new cast that most people don't know. How much of a fair shot is that going to give the new The Office?

Jay should go to ABC and pitch a show called "Jay Leno Tonight" with them for the same time slot as Letterman and Conan. Not make Conan give up his show.

14. No, where was he doing that?
I love the victimhood.

There's a ripoff picture of the "I'm with Coco" thing that says 'I'm with Leno" and has him standing in front of an Iranian flag (for some reason).

This 10 PM thing was just a very recent experiment, and the claims otherwise have been ridiculous.

He could have taken a stand in 2004, but instead he stabbed Conan in the back years later.
