Airline’s ‘cougar’ ad blasted by rape victims
Source: MSNBC

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - An advert for an airline competition that portrays older, single women as "cougars" who prey on young men at night is to close on Monday after incurring the wrath of both male and female rape victims in New Zealand.

"Cougar" has become a popular term for sexually aggressive older women on the hunt for younger men, with actress Courteney Cox recently starring in TV comedy "Cougar Town." But the term can be viewed either as misogynistic or a word of empowerment.

An online spoof documentary by Air New Zealand, promoting a competition for free tickets to a rugby tournament, tells of a so-called cougar starving herself during the day then "hunting large slabs of meat at night" by stalking young men at a bar.

The voiceover says despite men's attempts to ward off the woman's advances, the cougar has "not tasted fresh meat for days" and drags her victims to her inner-city apartment, often forcing them to listen to "Enya or the Eurythmics."

8. Isn't the gay stereotyping more offensive and blatant than the rape message?
It's more about seduction than rape. She isn't using drugs or force. But the swishing of the wrist to pretend ot be gay is probably more offensive to US audiences.

2. What is the connection with rape?
Just rape groups needing any excuse to get in the news?

4. Those groups equate "preying for sex" to "I wanna rape you".
It's easy to dismiss this as a dispute over political correctness/sexism, but then if you consider the real-world consequences, this is a serious matter.

11. It's laughing about older chicks who like *nonconsenting* younger dudes
Because everybody knows younger dudes would never voluntarily bang an older chick, hyuk hyuk hyuk.

It's not offensive, it's just stupid.

13. What is a "rape group"? Why would a "rape group" want to get in the news?

Sounds like you think men getting raped is rather funny.

19. Nobody's making fun of rape (at least I hope not)
I just find it rather telling that sexually assertive women are conflated with rapists. Somebody skidded down an ideological slippery slope and landed in the Land of Bad Taste.

21. I find it rather telling that the division between sexual assertiveness and rape
is confusing. The difference between being assertive and forcing a nonconsensual person can be not very big.

If you've never had to force a man to have sex with you, that is good. However, this is, as another poster wrote, about "older chicks who like *nonconsenting* younger dudes"

Some people really need to get a grip on real life and stop going into a panic over the faux-P.C.-hysteria-du-jour.

7. "Cougar Town" is a pretty funny show
They pretty much dropped the whole cougar motif after the first episode. Now it's just a sit-com about a divorcee. Courtney Cox is very lovable and the show has a real heart to it and has gotten better throughout the season.

Too bad they caved.

14. A very funny commercial, but drawn out way too long.
Shades of SNL.

Nothing to justify poutrage, however.

16. Having seen it, they seem to be over reacting
Just an expression of dominance or submission doesn't equal rape.

Nor does satirizing a group mean it's being mean.

Yeah rape is bad. But lets not go to the opposite extreme.

17. There is no word for a sexually assertive male.
That's "expected."

I'm one of those sexually assertive 40-something women, and I assure you, I've never had to force a man to have sex with me. There are some whom I scare shitless, but who needs them?
