This is the tale of two New England states' A.G.'s, both of whom are running for the U.S. Senate. Both have consistently been on the side of the consumer and the public good during their tenures. Both went in or are going into their campaigns with high positive polling numbers.
Knowing Richard Blumenthal, our state AG, I am sure he is taking really good notes. He's a smart guy. My guess is that he won't let himself be caught in the same situation that Martha Coakley found herself in.
But there is good news for us in CT: Blumenthal is popular at the grass roots level here. Even tho he lives in Greenwich and is wealthy, there is not much resentment against him. Why? Because he takes on the bad guys. All of them. You name it, consumer safety, the banksters, the utilities, he's on them.
And he's everywhere. If you don't know what he looks like and you've been living in CT for more than a week, then you don't have a pulse.
My only concern (and I hope it is a minor one): he can't let himself get dragged into a Glenn Beck style interview, it's a no-win situation for him. Fortunately, he is not in a contest with a Scott Brown type...now. Unless Brown wins in MA and the pubs want to pull the same thing in CT against Blumenthal by sticking a Brown type into the contest. I am sure Dick has thought of this possibility...
Stay tuned after MA to see what is going to unfold in CT...
