Check in if you agree that removing Lieberman
as head of Homeland Security should be the first order of business in the Senate if Coakley is not elected.

If Coakley is not elected, we do not have 60 votes in the Senate and Lieberman's vote won't be that crucial.

Lieberman has done all he could to hurt the Democratic Party, and he should not chair a Senate committee as important as Homeland Security. Frankly, if he can't be trusted to support the Democratic Party majority on health care, he can't be trusted to support the Democratic Party on Homeland Security.

Lieberman is not a Democrat, and he should not be included in our caucus.

19. Not sure of the connection there
but it seems in order to get the conservadems on board (Lincoln, Landrieu, Nelson, Lieberman), Reid did what he felt he had to do. Me, I would have gone reconcilliation and let the pukes scream about it all the wanted. Not sure how that connects to the President.

Lieberman needs to have his chairmanship yanked ASAP.. he won't be able to hold the Dems hostage anymore anyway so what do we have to lose?

I don't see Harry growing a set and actually going through with it, though.

31. Removing Fillibuster rules would be first order of business. Removing Liebermann should be second!
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 04:53 AM by cascadiance
And that might be the one thing that might happen positive if she were to lose. It would FORCE the Dems perhaps to recognize that getting rid of the fillibuster obstacle is a necessary part of governance and avoiding midterm election disaster, in addition to disempowering the identifiable DLC obstructionists, and forcing the stealth ones out in the open if they exist or forcing them to support the people if they want to get reelected.

I am also 99.99% sure that the powers that be are already grooming his replacement. If CT progressives want a candidate, they had better be looking for that candidate now.

35. Unrec'd for laziness...
in not taking a minute to research the issue (or even bother to check the archives here)...

The Democrats can not "remove" Lieberman from his Chairmanship. Chairmanships are voted on by the entire Senate as a Bill on reorganization. To pass a new Bill, requires another vote, which requires 60 votes to support cloture. Just guessing that Lieberman won't support it, and neither will the Republicans.

The Democrats can remove him from the Caucus, but that will be guaranteed to deliver him to the Republican Party, and given a lock-step Republican majority, you will be giving up a Senator who does generally support the Democrats on procedural votes (HCR being the exception).
