I seriously just saw this posted here. The awful grammar aside, what is with people sitting and watching rec/unrec totals? Are there seriously DU'ers just sitting there reloading the page over and over to watch the totals change?
If so, talking about a waste of bandwidth on the DU website; what was the point of this feature again? At this point, it seems all it did was encourage DU'ers to spend more time mindlessly clicking, reloading, and staring at a computer screen.

21. Too many DUers are obsessed with Rec/UnRec, particularly when somebody UnRecs their thread.

The constant whining and crying because somebody dared to give a thread an UnRec. It's like a big thread popularity contest. Frankly, in the years I've been here I've only gone to the Greatest page a couple of time. I just click "Discuss" at the top of the page to get all of the latest threads no matter what forum they may be in.

Besides, kicking a thread by responding is more valuable than Rec/UnRec that are only good for 24 hours. You can kick a thread to the top of its forum by responding even days after it was posted.

If it's about your football team, your dog, your conversation with the person in the check out line, your kid, your latest physical complaint, or your cat, I'm unrecommending it.

If it's about freepers, Rush, Palin, or Glenn Beck, I'm unrecommending it.

If it's by some OP who can't understand that every thought doesn't require a new thread, I'm unrecommending it.

If it contains the word "fucktard" or "fuckwad," I'm unrecommending it.

There's many good reasons to unrecommend threads.

Are there any groups left who haven't been belittled yet? I see a number of posts here denigrating people who keep track of their recs. Like it's a sin to want to have something you wrote on the greatest page or the front page.

Well let me come out as the honest person here. I don't do many OP's. But when I do they are on something that is important to me. I take my time, I write edit and re-read my post a number of times before I post it and I try to make sure that it makes sense. I make sure I am happy with what I wrote and when I finally hit that post button I hope that as many people as possible read it, I hope it gets lots of recs and I just love it when a thread I wrote touches enough people that it makes the front page. One of my best moments last year was when Skinner pm'ed me that someone wanted to put one of my OP's in a book.

If the biggest complaint you have is people need to stop watching recs and unrecs, and you felt so strongly about it that you had to make a post on it, then you have some seriously screwed up priorities imo.
