'Love Story' author Erich Segal dies at age 72

Just in: Love Story author Erich Segal has died, reports AP. The news comes from the writer's daughter, Francesca Segal, who says her father died Sunday at his London home from a heart attack. He was 72.  A funeral was held today for Segal, who was a fellow of Wolfson College at Oxford University.

Love Story, a tear-jerker about a young misfit couple, became a hit film in 1970 starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw. It was nominated for seven Oscars and the line "Love means never having to say you're sorry," became a part of pop culture. Segal is survived by his wife, Karen James, and daughters Francesca and Miranda.

And I thought it did a pretty good job of depicting conflicts between parents and their adult children.

To tell the story of how great a loathe can be?

I know that Mr. Segal didn't produce the movie, but goodness! Some stories are tear-jerkers. Others go after your tear ducts with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Then there's Love Story. I was a romantic once upon a time, but that movie? Whoof! I had a friend who was in college in the early 1970s, and the movie was on broadcast TV, everyone in the dorm watching. At the end, when Ali McGraw gets sicker and sicker, and prettier and prettier, she asks Ryan O'Neal to get into the hospital bed with her for one last cuddle. Just as he lifts the covers, one of the boys said, "Are you contagious?" Which prompted the tearful rejoinder, "Oh, you asshole!"

I only wish I'd been there.

and cried my eyes out... as did the two friends I who I saw it with. Of course, we were in high school then.

I watched it on TV a few years ago - and couldn't believe what a sap I'd been when I first saw it.
