Southers Withdraws His Own Nomination to Lead TSA (Update1)

Bloomberg) -- Erroll Southers, whom President Barack Obama had nominated to lead the Transportation Security Administration, withdrew his name from consideration today, the White House said.
“It is clear that my nomination has become a lightning rod for those who have chosen to push a political agenda at the risk of the safety and security of the American people,” Southers said in a statement forwarded by the White House.
White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said the president accepted Southers’s decision.
His nomination had been put on hold by Republican Senator Jim DeMint, who said he was concerned Southers would allow TSA employees to have collective-bargaining rights. A group of senators also questioned a censure Southers had received while with the FBI for background checks run years before on his then- estranged wife’s boyfriend. .........(more)
