New basketball league for White Americans - 12 cities
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 11:47 AM by RamboLiberal
A new professional basketball league boasting rosters made up exclusively of white Americans has its eyes set on Augusta, but the team isn't receiving a warm welcome.

The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, who has publicly expressed his support for minor league teams in the past, said he would not do the same for this team.

"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."

-----

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas' indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans' dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/2010/01/19/nba_563760.shtml

A whites-only basketball league aims to launch in twelve cities this summer, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle. The All-American Basketball Alliance would also ban players born outside the United States.

The league's commissioner, Don "Moose" Lewis, claims that he doesn't "hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now." Thus, he says, the All-American Basketball Alliance would be "a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

The report includes additional shocking quotes from the commissioner:

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." ...

"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."

12. I can see it being very successful, there are a lot of racists who would support it. There may be a
problem getting the players, but even if the quality of play was low it would satisfy a lot of the rightwingers.

39. I guess
Clearly there are a lot of racists out there. I'd just think they'd be ashamed to show up at a game as if it was outing themselves as a bigot. Is that what this country has become? A place where people are proud to be bigots? Proud to be uneducated? I think sociologists are going to look back at the beginning of this century and say America was suffering for some sort of mass insanity and hysteria brought about by the 2000 election and 911.

19. I've spent a lot of hours doing stats
and you'd be amazed at the whiny babies who are sitting on the bench who'd rather do something like 'level their playing field' (IOW, play with other people who SUCK) than root for their team and actually learn something. It's absolutely sickening. Dumbass 40-something "I-used-to-shoot-only-3-pointers-back-in-the-day" thinks they can relive the glory days of their tiny private school when they were a big fish in a little pond. These are people who can't play in the real world so they try to make change the rules. Fark 'em, they all are wannabes.

41. By my reading, this would violate several Employment Discrimination Laws
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in many more aspects of the employment relationship. It applies to most employers engaged in interstate commerce with more than 15 employees, labor organizations, and employment agencies. The Act prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Sex includes pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions. It makes it illegal for employers to discriminate in relation to hiring, discharging, compensating, or providing the terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. Employment agencies may not discriminate when hiring or referring applicants. The Act also prohibits labor organizations from basing membership or union classifications on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

63. If this AABA is racist (and it is), does this make the WNBA Sexist?
The NBA, MLB, NFL, PGA and NASCAR all allow every race and gender to compete.
Various special-interest professional leagues, like the all-women WNBA, prohibit males from playing.
The WMBA is probably the most common sport I can think of, but there a few pro leagues that are single-demographic.

If the WNBA is allowed to discriminate against a protected class (gender) then is the AABA allowed to segregate race?
If it's acceptable for the WNBA to discriminate, why isn't it acceptable for the AABA?

Just curious what the DUers think of this...

108. Yes, there is nothing in the rules prohibiting them from playing.
There have been no women that sucessfully competed though - the issue is not skill but physical disadvantage. Some women do make into the PGA or NASCAR and that because these predominently skill based games without too much need for physical strength. Many WNBA players have skill that rivals or surpasses some NBA players (ball handling, shooting, knowledge) but the physical aspect, strength, and speed has been a physiological hurdle. There have been several women to play college football (kickers) however they were unable to compete at the next level.

In the professional leagues, there is no rules or technical roadblocks for females to compete.
OTOH, leagues like the WNBA are single demographic by rule only.

65. people will be filling the arenas to watch your "fundamental basketball"
maybe they can have a bounce-pass challenge. i'm really looking forwarded to the two-handed set shot competition. and as far as "attacking you in the stands," i'm guessing this numbnut never heard of ty cobb. i'm pretty sure he was white.

At 5'11" I was a "big man".

There was such a thing, but that was in the late '70's.

87. That'd be weird.
You'd have to learn a bunch of new moves - hooks, low-post spins, turn-around jumpers and stuff.

I guess the games would be pretty high-speed.

I'd like to watch that.

80. This is patently illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964...
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 09:34 PM by VOX
"Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 USC 2000e, makes it unlawful for an employer to hire or discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his/her compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment, because of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This covers hiring, firing, promotions and all workplace conduct."

The moment this new "professional" basketball league turned away a player on the basis of skin color, the avalanche of lawsuits would be prodigious.

At best, this is probably nothing more than an unpleasant publicity stunt.

Can you imagine the sort of person who'd try out for a team in that league? Or a corporation willing to buy ad space with them?

I'm pretty sure Rush Limbaugh wouldn't be interested in commentating for them; he only seems to show up at places where he can piss people off by being more outlandish than everyone else there. Here, he's finally met his match.

But if he did take that gig, wouldn't he be the color commentator?

Basketball was meant to be played above the rim.

They're banning players from joining teams solely based on race. And these are professional players, making them technically employees of the league/teams, making them subject to employment law. Wouldn't that violate the Civil Rights Act?

119. This gives the CBA a whole new meaning
Caucasian Basketball Association?

How come? White ballers can't hold a candle to blacks, so they had to form their own league? Fundamental basketball? In English, that translates to the boring version of basketball suburban kids play in their backyards.

I'm white myself, but if I wanted to play basketball, I'd play against the best players, no matter what they looked like on the outside.

Last time I checked, segregation was illegal.
