It’s been quite a while since you and I talked. The last time, I had told you how proud I was that you had been elected and given myself and the country hope. You know I am unhappy with your choice of Joe Biden as your Vice-president. I thought Hillary Clinton would have been a spectacular choice as VP and would have guaranteed us the White House through 2024 (I hope I can live that long to see that). I’m also a bit unhappy that you’ve spent so much time trying to be bipartisan with the Republicans while they stonewall the legislating process, block your nominees from critical appointments, and basically act as if they are the ones still in control. I was hoping you had realized that your efforts were futile last year while you were negotiating with Joe Lieberman, Olympia Snow, and Max Baucus. I know, Max is supposed to be one of us, but he’s bought and paid for by the health care industry, so I consider him one of them. Now that we’ve blown the Senate seat in Massachusetts to our worst nightmare (more on that later) maybe you’ll realize that when you try to run with the big dogs, you had better have a long leash.
I’m very upset with you over Afghanistan. It is a money pit. And it also is going to suck the lifeblood out of this Country. I know, the gas pipeline, your people think that’s important. But the people in the Pentagon, who only care about keeping the ‘defense’ Industry thriving, (why is it called Defense? All of my life, our military has been on the offense.) don’t give a rat’s ass about the lives of our soldiers. . Isn’t it time you listened to the people who elected you and learned from History that THAT part of the World will be forever locked in the Fifth century AD, and NOTHING we can do will change it? Enough with the Imperialistic vision of the last 25 years of Republican rule. It’s time we thought about OUR vision for the future. A future free of war and the need for a military still fighting the Cold War.
Now about the banking and housing crisis. I am not an economist or even a bookkeeper. But this whole bailout stinks to high Heavens. And the people who NEED the most help, those out there about to lose their homes, have been left out in the cold and your help for them is not working. They aren’t all to blame for overbuying. Much of the fault lies with greedy Realtors, bankers, and mortgage brokers, who took a piece out of all of them and then got away Scott free while these folks are now homeless. You should have spent the money on them not on the people who ran this scam. But, as Wall Street and the banks give out billions in bonuses for what us common folk don’t know, you make veiled threats about transaction taxes instead of using your Justice Department to find out what is really going on.
But I digress. What I’m writing you about is the loss of the Senate seat held by Teddy Kennedy for literally generations. A man who spent his political life trying to do what was best for the people of Massachusetts, and in his waning hours, what was best for the Country. A man who got out of his sickbed to thrill us at the convention where you were nominated to support YOU. A man who again stepped up in spite of his terminal illness to attend your inauguration, just like most of America did. A man who wanted to see health care for ALL Americans passed in the last hours of his life, and who left that task up to you. A man whose seat has now been taken by a charlatan because you wern’t interested enough in HIS legacy to defend it with the same strength he defended you. Why did you fail him? We the People, who elected you and stood with you over this past year have watched the Republicans outmaneuver you time after time. And the loss of the Senate seat last night is simply the last straw. Your Hail Mary this weekend was a joke. You make yourself and us look foolish to a party that works hard at gaining an inch while you try to gain a mile, and trip over every obstacle they throw in your path. And they are gaining again. To the point that I wonder how hard you will defend the next candidate, or handle the next crisis without thinking that maybe the people who VOTED FOR YOU want something better than to compromise with the Right.
I have to go now. To say I am disappointed is putting it mildly. But you are OUR President, and I hope, God I hope, you’ve learned something from last night. And I hope you’ll talk to the people who advise you and maybe, just maybe, ask one of us simple folks for advice next time.
