Humane Society International expected to arrive in Haiti by Friday.
Some folks here were asking about animal organizations and their first responders providing care for the animals that may have been injured during the quake...

Amid the fast-changing and round-the-clock relief efforts for Haiti, Humane Society International has assembled a team of trained veterinary experts to enter Port au Prince in the coming 48 hours. The team representing HSI, The HSUS and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Assn., is partnering with a group in the Dominican Republic, Veterinary Care & Humane Services, Caribbean Project (VCHS).

Our HSI/HSUS/HSVMA field responders include a French-speaking veterinarian and a paramedic trained in disaster response and animal handling. They will be accompanied by two veterinary technicians from VCHS and a translator. The team will provide immediate animal care as it can, and also assess conditions for animals in the capitol city and surrounding areas. As circumstances permit, our experts will also advise emergency and relief workers on extra steps they might take in the coming days to alleviate the suffering of animals while the desperate work to help the island’s human population continues.

http://www.hsus.org/hsi/disaster_services/reports_from_the_field/2010_haiti_earthquake_11310.html

In addition, an international coalition of groups (United Animal Nations, ASPCA, HSUS, Best Friends, American Humane, IFAW and WSPA) have formed ARCH (Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti) will be transporting a mobile clinic once permission has been granted.

I'd never kill mine or someone else's pet just to eat.

And I would beat the holy crap out of anyone who tried.

And you'd best never EVER let me catch you trying to kill my pets for food, I don't care how hungry you or your spawn are.

28. Maybe that's why you don't, cannot, understand.
Don't have kids, never will

Then, it's hard to understand how people would put their kids ahead of pets. And it may also be hard for you to understand how they would put other people's children over pets, too. Yes, even their own pets. Because unless and until you have children (or, perhaps, beloved nieces and/or nephews), then it can be an abstract idea.

Once you have a child, you get it. You understand how important that other little being is to you, and you understand how important other people's kids are to them. The maternal and paternal instincts are some of the strongest in nature. Protection of one's children takes precedence over even one's own life.

Nobody loves their pets any more than I do. I think it's fine that people are down in Haiti helping animals because I'm sure that compassion towards animals is, ultimately, helping their owners, too — owners who may not have another living thing to cling to in their time of need.

But there is no equating the value of a human life with that of a pet's. That does not compute.

64. So you are saying
that if you were in a burning building and it was a choice of saving your pet or your neighbor's child, you would choose your pet?

I wouldn't. I would mourn my pet (as I have done more times than I want to count), but I would save the child.

This is the same shit I saw after Katrina.

There were people KILLING THEMSELVES.... PEOPLE, because the media attention was off, they were kicked out of their temporary housing, and had no place to go and no way to survive. They were suffering, obviously, from trauma.

Yet, what did I see here, half the country away from NOLA? People going down and "rescuing" animals, "fostering" them, and taking care of them.

And not giving ONE FLYING FUCK that PEOPLE were killing themselves because they had no way to survive.

HUMANE???

Fuck, no.

Deluded and heartless.

that people who care about animals can't possibly care about people too. It's just too... difficult. Or takes up too much time. Or something.

Or not.

Why don't you save your venom for those who aren't doing anything to help anyone beyond themselves?

HUMANE people could understand the expression of pain from a homeless person who is told constantly that we aren't important, and sees animals get the attention.

You can hear the pain and understand, or you can denigrate.

When you can't even relate to people KILLING THEMSELVES for lack of a place to live, that speaks volumes... don't you think?

41. You're talking to DU's resident Poor Person (TM).
Of course, there are many people on here going through incredibly difficult times, perhaps more than her, but only she knows what suffering is.

And if you're not constantly posting about the plight of the homeless in every single thread, even if that thread has absolutely nothing to do with the issue, then you're a heartless meanie who hates the less fortunate with every fiber of your being.

Of course, you'd think she'd be out helping the homeless instead of being superglued to the computer 24/7, but after all, only she knows what it's like to suffer.

:sarcasm:

Almost all of the people I know who do animal activism are also deeply involved in caring for human needs, and a disproportionate number of them do so professionally.

Humans ARE animals. There's no competition, we're all in this thing together.

And no, I'm not in favor of jailing homeless people. I've worked at shelters, kitchens, and mobile food-distro units in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. If anything, I'm more often in danger of being arrested for feeding homeless people.

Hyperbolic hypocrisy does nothing for homelessness in America.

53. we don't? how would you know? And it is a simple fact among the
people I know who love animals that they treat people pretty well too. Too bad that is sometimes now reversed.

it is a sickness that people who step up to help all floundering life in need are somehow beaten right and left by those who profess to love and hope the best for people. I don't profess to know your story. Your tantrum about the suffering of others is odd. What the hell do you care about people helping the animals too? Some of the people who got their pets back found a new reason to live because of it. You sound like you are over-identifying with an event that you had no contact with just to kick people who want to help and are probably using their own money to do it. Being kind to ALL things that suffer is good.

people helping the animals too is 'deluded and heartless'? Not be a kentucky mile.

Just because you don't give a fuck about animals, doesn't mean I (and others like me) don't give a fuck about people. Matter of fact, I've donated more $$ to Haiti relief than I have to ANY of the orgs (combined) mentioned in the OP this year. Yeah, you just got told.

I actually *was* homeless for a period of time. When I was a child my family was extremely poor and it resulted in our staying with family, and squatting in a church basement for awhile.

Somehow, that hasn't made me think that animals are not worth saving too.

I just don't get why *some* here think it's an either/or proposition.

they were under orders not to give food to the children.

There were, however, no such prohibitions on feeding stray dogs.

Until he ordered his team to stop, his troops would sit feeding scraps to the dogs while starving children stood around and watched.
