The Wife was laid off today.
Now we are a zero income family.
She was a contract worker so no unemployment, just what we managed to save monthly.
I have 22 apps out and have had 2 interviews, zero call backs or offers.
I have even applied at a car dealership to wash cars.
I have been out of work for 7 months now.

We have a bit in the bank and family to help out so we don't lose the house.

Well, we ain't in Haiti anyway.
And thank the FSM for food stamps.

4. I'm so sorry
That sucks so much.

I'm glad you have some savings and some help from your family. You don't say how much of a cushion that is, but at least it's something.

Good luck to you both.

I'm not sure what things are stable (restaurant industry?) in that part of OR, but please keep on trying.

I know it's easy to get discouraged, but we're rooting for you. Keep healthy and keep your chin up!

9. "The Wife"? Man, how would you like to be refered to simply as "The Husband"
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 08:51 PM by LaPera
Isn't "my wife" has a much less possession sounding, less macho, nicer terminology than "The Wife"....The Wife sounds so distant, no love, like old people set in their ways use to think, and talk, referring to women as "The wife".....I'm a dude and I certainly can't get behind it seems so sexist and Archie Bunker like....I prefer to refer to my spouse as my wife, even "my better half" is old school but certainly has a nicer ring to it than, The Wife, the old lady, the hag, the nag, "The wife".

I am sorry though that your wife was laid off - my wife also lost her job, over five month's ago....

your spouse, wife, to refer to you to her friends & strangers as yeah, The Husband got laid off today as opposed to one's wife speaking to her friends or strangers, that my husband got laid off today - "The Husband" is what you would prefer?

38. Give the guy a break....
for crying out loud his wife lost his job, he's unemployed, and you want to vent about how YOUR FEELINGS are hurt? It's not like he was slapping her around or calling her a b*tch, he just made a reference that he's probably made a thousand times (albeit one I wouldn't use), and on a very rough day, no less. Save the lecture for another time, PLEASE...

we're in the same situation or worse as my wife was denied any unemployment insurance and she lost her job over five month's ago - as we have no health insurance, a huge mortgage and responsibility to our children...And yeah, it certainly would fucking bother my wife if I referred to her in relating this story, so impersonal, to others, as "The Wife" and it would bother me too!

23. I was this close to picking up one of those positions
but was fourth in line.
Oh well.
I am sure things will get better, she is going to the casino tomorrow and I have one surfboard order to fill.
We have enough for two months at least right now and we are expecting 2300.00 on our tax refund. We can stretch that to July or August if we have to.
We bought this house in July, we qualify for the 8k credit but that process is taking 6 months or so.
We chose to file and then will amend when the refund comes.
Our mortgage is only 664.00, we are ending cable at the end of the month.

27. Sounds like you're thinking clearly.
That's always a good thing.

Another suggestion: I donate plasma twice a week and that nets me another $55 a week. If you're medically able to, it might be a good idea. I work nights so I love doing it.

41. I wish you the very best of luck.
Those of us with jobs and health care and the ability to afford a few non-necessities here and there need to keep in mind just how quickly our good fortune can bite the dust.

Again, so sorry to hear about your situation and my best wishes and hopes for you and your wife.

13. The worst part of it are the trolls
who will reply to your posts telling you the economy is doing great and "My 401k is up this year".

I am living it too.

I have had some luck with the government. Check with the state/city government where you live. Right now my state is hiring a LOT of people to process the increased need for social services.

I'm also applying my retail work history to get a 2nd job (which will be a 2nd should I get this government job) as a 3rd party part time merchandiser.

24. I think contract workers can collect
I think they just have some kind of waiting period. Might depend on the state. In any case - don't assume - look into it. I know my husband was a consultant and assumed he couldn't collect only to find out he really could. Please don't assume.

Hang in. Our thoughts and hopes are with you.

There, but for the Grace of FSM......

I started a new job this week. Very nice. Very secure.

But my wife has kept us going for the past 2 years while I've been un- or underemployed.

I know how it feels living on that thread.

Hang in there and good luck. Sometimes it comes at the most unexpected times.

35. The wife and I wish you the best of luck
The last time I was unemployed, I talked to everyone that would listen. I would just ask them "what do you do for a living". I live in a metropolitan area so there is more varied opportunities than Coos Bay but it created an opportunity for me that i would not have expected.Give it a try. I cant hurt.

....hang in there, and just try to find ANY type of work to do which can bring in some cash (and don't let pride get in the way).

Also, do you have an extra room in your house you could rent out to someone for a few months? There are a lot of people looking for inexpensive places to live right now and the extra income for you and your wife would be very helpful.

Best of luck, pal. My job is currently hanging by a thread, too.
