President Barack Obama resubmitted three Justice Department nominees whose nominations were returned by the Senate on Dec. 24, the White House announced today.
The president re-nominated Dawn Johnsen for the Office of Legal Counsel, Christopher Schroeder for the Office of Legal Policy and Mary L. Smith for the Tax Division. (If confirmed, Smith would be the highest-ranking American Indian to serve in the Justice Department.)
The Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are urging Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) to hold new hearings on Johnsen before the panel votes on her. The GOP panel members have not indicated if they would also like the chairman to schedule new hearings for Schroeder and Smith before they receive committee votes.
