Sanders expects Brown win to turn Dems against Bernanke

01/20/10 04:56 PM ET

Scott Brown's victory in the Massachusetts Senate race could deter some Democrats from supporting Ben Bernanke's nomination for a second term at the Federal Reserve, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Wednesday.

Sanders has long opposed Bernanke's bid to head the board for another four years, and he is one of five senators who maintains a hold on his nomination. But the senator suggested in a statement Wednesday afternoon that other Democrats may soon oppose Bernanke too, sensing Democrats' defeat in Massachusetts as a sign of voters' frustration with the economy's direction.

“I sense that many Democrats see the Massachusetts election as a wake-up call,” Sanders said. “There is a growing understanding that our economy is in severe distress, a greater appreciation that people are disgusted with the never-ending greed on Wall Street, and a better recognition that we need a new direction at the Fed.

“People do not want another term for the man whose major job as Fed chairman was to protect the safety and soundness of our financial system but instead was asleep at the switch,” Sanders added. “I am confident that more and more senators understand that we need a new Fed and a new Wall Street and will oppose Bernanke’s confirmation.”

4. Dems should also kick the fuck out of Lieberman now, the pile of shit
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 12:16 AM by GreenTea
Lieberman should be thrown out of his chairmanship on his ass and stomped on....His "60th" vote (was always bullshit) that he held the democratic party hostage to and back stabbed every progressive Dem when we could least afford it.

Lieberman campaigned for republican McCain, Lieberman is NOT a democrat, he's an Independent who votes with republicans....Kick fucking Lieberman in the ass and send him on his way back across the isle to the republicans, let them have this two-faced, lying unethical shameless pile of shit Lieberman, he fits into the slimy republican party perfectly.

11. Absolutely!
But will they dare?
Are they not all or almost all Liebermans in some ways?
I mean in not respecting their constituencies and going with special interest groups?
Lieberman is notorious for his betrayal of US interests in foreign policy.
But is he really worse than others in domestic?

Sanders has a good proposal, to which I would like to add:
Fire Tim Geithner,

Fire every other center-tacking, corporatist, DLC whore in the administration,

13. When the democrats go against corporate America
we will see the beginning of REAL CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN. I get so mad when I hear that, and think of the way the Obama administration is misleading us I almost choke. I still think Obama is naive and doesn't know what he is doing, he is letting those around him pull him around by the nose. HE is the one who should CHANGE. He should change to a president with a spine. Basically I think he wants to do good for the country, but he is floundering because he is inexperience and those in his inner circle are screwing him over.
