French braid allows student to return to class

On Tuesday 4-year-old Taylor Pugh returned to class after his mother Elizabeth Taylor used French braids to pull his hair back.


“You should have seen his face when the principal told him he could go back to class; he lit up,” Elizabeth Taylor said.

Elizabeth Taylor tried to use traditional braiding on her son in the past only to have him experience pain and scalp bleeding. She said that the French braiding seems to be doing okay.

“He really wanted to go back to class. He has seen me braid my hair before and asked if there were other types of braids that did not hurt,” Elizabeth Taylor said.

Pugh has been out of class since November because the length of his hair is in violation of the Mesquite Independent School District’s dress code. He has been serving in-school suspension in the school library and receiving instruction from an aide.

So he has long hair. So what? I've seen preschool kids with blue mohawks. Sure, the parents likely had something do to with it, but what's the big deal?

If they're going to crack down on anything, they should pass laws to keep parents from giving their kids preposterous names like "Apple."

3. Unconstitutional to punish a boy for long hair at a public school.

The Supreme Court ruled in "Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (1969)" that students can wear black armbands and otherwise dress as they like as long as it doesn't cause a disruption.

4. As a teacher in a public school system, I've seen some stupid rules.

And I've sen some idiotic rationales for said rules. Case in point: I was teaching at a school that required all students to tuck in their shirts. As I was walking along one morning, I noticed a boy with an untucked shirt. I intended to let it go, but as I pased him by I heard another teacher actually say, in a very loud, assertive voice, the following statement:

"No untucked shirts, young man! You can't learn with your shirt hanging out!"

Seriously. This happened. "You can't learn with your shirt hanging out!"

Maybe that's why the kid with the French braid was in trouble. Maybe there's a new study that proves it's impossible (for boys) to learn with hair more than five inches.
