1. Democrats have plenty to lose

They currently have the House, the Senate and the presidency. Depending on who retires, they could start to control the Supreme Court. Losing an election to a tea-bagger is only going to convince democrats that they tried to be too liberal. They will grow more cautious so as to not offend the independents that voted against them this time.

3. Single Payer, Universal Health Care.

Cut the Defense budget to pay for it. Sounds good to me. We could actually have "Free" health care for all.
