1 : the depiction of governmental behavior (as in pictures, writing, or AM radio) intended to cause political excitement
2 : materials (as books, photographs, or AM radio programs) that grossly misrepresent public service for the purpose of causing political excitement
3 : the depiction of public policy issues in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction
It's very tempting to shake our fingers at purveyors of political smut, such as teabagger-in-chief Rush Limbaugh (who was indeed in rare form yesterday), for corrupting the civil values of easily misled US citizens. But perhaps we need to focus instead on why there are so many easily misled US citizens.
The entire teabagger phenomenon can be characterized as 'popular anti-intellectual angst'. In fact, self-proclamation as an anti-intellectual appears to be one diagnostic symptom of 'Teabagger Identity Disorder':
