Elizabeth Edwards: "My marriage shouldn't be on anybody's radar screen except mine."
Elizabeth Edwards: 'Whole family feels relieved'

By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer Mike Baker, Associated Press Writer – 3 mins ago

RALEIGH, N.C. – Elizabeth Edwards says her "whole family feels relieved" now that her husband has come forward to claim paternity of a child he fathered out of wedlock.

Edwards said in an interview with The Associated Press that she believes John Edwards is also relieved to put the matter behind him. She said she hopes the declaration will help end publicity around the family's matters.

She declined to talk about her marital status, saying, "My marriage shouldn't be on anybody's radar screen except mine."

Elizabeth Edwards' cancer returned in March 2007 in an incurable form. She said the cancer got worse for a period but has recently been improving, with some signs of tumors shrinking.

"You hate to tempt cancer," she says.

1. shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn.t, but it is...
...he ran for Prez, so it's always gonna be...I sympathize, though, I think mainly becasue I'm sick of hearing about John's affair with the craziest woman on the planet...a blonde Sarah palin.

3. She's right...
...and as we know, when it comes to the life of public figures, there's a segment of the population that loves poking around in their dirty laundry.

The message will fall on the deaf ears of its intended audience (the people who HAVE it on their radar screens), but I respect her for delivering it.

4. She's right, especially since John is no longer in politics. Their business and theirs
alone.

8. And yet, there he was on my tv this morning.
Politicians don't "quit".. they just fall out of favor, or leave in a fury of scandal...polish their image, and return later...

Politicians USE their family life as a prop.. They want that image to say "Hey, look at me and my perfect family".. They cannot later get mad when people are curious about that family, or when they question the candidate as unsavory things pop up.
If you push your family out there, people feel perfectly okay about asking about them..

7. I understand her point and all, but...
didn't she do the talk show circuit when this news started coming out last year?

And isn't just adding more fuel to the fire by her making this statement?

12. The woman wrote two books, went on talk shows, and now she wants privacy?
I'm sorry. I know this is unpopular here on DU.

I liked Elizabeth. A LOT. I couldn't wait to buy her first book. Two-thirds of the way through, I realized I had admired a woman who seemed to be kind of mean and self-absorbed. She took unneeded potshots at Democrats I liked; Howard Dean, Theresa Heinz Kerry.

I didn't like her quite so much after I (forced myself to) finish her self-indulgent book.

I think the Edwards relationship is much more complex, and mutually destructive, than the picture book family they sold the American public in 2004. He had no business running in '08, she had no business vouching for his honesty.

If not for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, we may have had an unprecedented disaster in November 2008.

Elizabeth shoved her sterling marriage down our throats, and reveled in the glory and the money from her story. It's true that her marriage is her own business, but she certainly put a lot of effort into making it our business.

That said, I'm sorry for her heartache. I hope she and John can both find happiness...with or without each other.

17. If thats what she wanted she shouldnt have let her husband run.
Elizabeth is as worthless as her husband. She had no problem telling others how they should run their marriage durring the campaign but now doesnt like it when people comment on hers.

18. Except for caring about the well being of Elizabeth and her health conditions, I don't see why
anyone should care about this. I don't care who any politicians sleeps with. And I don't care about their kids, legitimate or otherwise. My best to everyone.Policy is what matters.
John Edwards disapponted many, including me, but so have many other pols. Big deal. Edwards isn't in the public arena anymore. I hope he continues his current work on poverty. It makes a difference. There is nothing to see here. Move on.

21. I am beginning to wonder if this "poverty work" has been begun at a convenient time.
His confession that he lied and is now owning up to the paternity of that child is only happening because his former top staffer is about to reveal all.

Everything with this guy seems to be wily but desperate attempts to cover his ass...

As for Elizabeth, I cut some slack for a woman who is, essentially, dying of cancer before our very eyes.

25. But we don't even know what it is he is doing!
this guy has lied to us so much, forgive me for doubting his intentions here. And I was an early supporter of the guy, which I completely regret...what a lapse of my own political "radar" on this guy...ugh...

It just seems so convenient to be doing this in conjunction with all of the bad publicity. I understand he has been going thru a real depression and that is sad, but it is in a way a reaping of the wages of sin...

27. Wello, WAPO have reported some of it. His work has been overseas
I have never regreted supporting his message. Ever. The man himself is not important to me. I liked him, sure. he wasn't as wonderful as i thought as a person. neither are most of my friends. But thtas life. But the message was still right . If anything we are more Two Americas than ever! And the insurance companies and bamks are worse than they ever were.

28. It's sad, isn't it? I remember those speeches back then and it's the reason I supported
him initially in the primary. His health care plan was the best one out there. I only gave up after he did and then I voted for Hillary in our CT primary.

I haven't been this disappointed in politician since LBJ (for different reasons of course). I think he could have done a lot of good. I am most disappointed that he presented his marriage as a "centerpiece" of his campaign and it was all a lie.

I do not like being lied to. It enrages me. I feel personally betrayed by him. It hurts a lot when someone in whom you have placed your trust does this sort of thing...

30.  I don't like it when i am lied to either but right now I am more concerned when
the pols lie about policy and it affects me. And there is a lot of that going on now..I am sickened beyond belief. All the last shreds of my idealism are gone.

31. You are right and I am sorry too. It's a hard time. Our trust in people we
believed in is shattered. I wish I could give you a lift in spirits...

My only advice is what I go to when I am depressed. The arts. I go to music, to poetry, to painting and sculpture. I am immersed now in books on the Italian Renaissance (for an early fall art intensive trip to Florence). It really takes me away from my immediate concerns.

Someone once said that art always saves you...I believe that is true.

Be well, Saracat...

it isn't that much different than politics. I suppose if I could just be an observer and let go, but somehow it never works that way! LOL. You be well too, CTYankee, and BTW, I am a CT Yankee as well from Conn, and Mid Altantic NY! We are wonderful folks! ( well most, with the notable exception of one current Sen. from Conn, who shall be nameless!)

33. I wish Elizabeth the best in her health struggles.....
but this is going to be news, like it or not. Especially considering the dog and pony show they had denying everything a year ago. Books tours, etc.

It's too bad a guy with real ideas on Populist ideas and health care reform had to flame out like this.
