Campaign Finance put in perspective.
In 2008, in all campaigns for the US House, Senate and the POTUS, there was approximately $5.3 billion raised and spent by all of these candidates. At the same time as these, Exxon/Mobil announced profits for one quarter of in excess of $10 billion.

What is truly scary is that one corporation could entirely finance the entire federal election cycle based on their profits in one three month period. In other words they could spend for every single office, $16.5 million, and still have a billion dollars left to support their presidential candidate of choice.

Also, who is to say where the money that Exxon/Mobil is spending is not coming foreign sources.

 in maryland.

1. To find an historical event of this magnitude of importance for our "democracy"
you have to go back all the way to the age of Andrew Jackson, when the vote was extended to (white, male) citizens regardless of their propertied status or debt.

This is like Universal Suffrage -but in reverse.
