Obama blasts Court decision on campaign finance

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is condemning a decision by the Supreme Court to roll back restrictions on campaign donations by corporations and unions.

In a written statement, Obama says the campaign finance ruling will lead to a "stampede of special interest money in our politics." Obama declared that his administration will work with Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress to come up with a "forceful response" to the high court's action.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that corporations may spend as freely as they like to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress.

Obama called it a big victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance

While some sunlight has been shed on the hefty sums shoveled into congressional campaign coffers in an effort to influence the Democrats' massive healthcare bill, little attention has been focused on the far larger sums received by President Barack Obama while he was a candidate in 2008.

A new figure, based on an exclusive analysis created for Raw Story by the Center for Responsive Politics, shows that President Obama received a staggering $20,175,303 from the healthcare industry during the 2008 election cycle, nearly three times the amount of his presidential rival John McCain. McCain took in $7,758,289, the Center found.

Blue Dog Coalition’ rakes in corporate cash.

The 52-member Blog Dog Coalition has been constantly attempting to weaken President Obama’s efforts to pass progressive health care, clean energy, and economic recovery legislation through Congress. According to a new report by the Center for Public Integrity, many of the industries that are opposing Obama’s agenda are now contributing heavily to the Blue Dogs:

So far this year, the political action committee attached to the fiscally conservative House Democratic voting bloc is on track to shatter all its fundraising records, raising more in the first six months of 2009 — more than $1.1 million — than it did in the entire 2003-04 fundraising cycle. Nearly 54 percent of the Blue Dog PAC’s haul this year comes from the energy, financial services and health care industries, up from 45 percent in 2004, according to analysis of CQ MoneyLine data by the Center for Public Integrity.

I've tried calling him Barry, Barack, Mr. President, Mr. Obama, even "hey you!" on occasion, in an attempt to get through to him. It's as if he doesn't know who he is, doesn't hear any voices but those in his own head, with echoes from the yes-men around him.

8. Emailed as soon as I saw the article. Here's what I said:

President Obama,

I am writing to let you know I was encouraged to see you come out against this morning's Supreme Court ruling in the case of Citizens United v FEC. The control of our government by the wealthy and powerful corporate interests have, over time, rendered the voice of the people of this once great country (although I question if it was ever as great as some would have us believe) mute. The recent decades of more corporate influence on our elected leaders resulting in less and less accountability from these entities is the root cause of the crisis in which we now find ourselves. I applaud you for speaking out against it and hope to see more vigorous efforts on your part and that of our Democrats in Congress to mitigate the damage this is doing to our democratic process. Without some restraint on this trend I do see the day when the government of the people, by the people, and for the people will perish from the earth. As of now, it is in critical condition and sinking fast.
