National Enquirer thinks of Pulitzer
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The editor of the National Enquirer says he intends to submit his tabloid's coverage of former U.S. Sen. John Edwards' sex scandal for a Pulitzer Prize.
Barry Levine told The Washington Post the Enquirer "should be a contender" a few hours after Edwards, a North Carolina Democrat, finally admitted he is the father of Rielle Hunter's daughter. Edwards had previously dismissed the story about his extramarital affair as "published in a supermarket tabloid."
Levine criticized other news outlets for their coverage of the scandal. Even after Edwards said in 2008 that he had had an affair with Hunter, Levine said the rest of the news media "still didn't dig into it to a great degree, the fact that he had fathered this child. The larger issue involving the love child was the cover-up."
The Enquirer first broke the story in 2007 and continued to follow up on it while Edwards ran for the Democratic nomination for president. After he dropped out of the race, Edwards admitted infidelity in an interview with ABC.
