2 ways to take action TODAY against SCOTUS ruling:

Us ~~> SCOTUS = Supreme Corporatists of the United States <~~ Them

http://www.movetoamend.org/

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions. The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule.

We Move to Amend.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to:

•Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

•Guarantee the right to vote and to participate, and to have our votes and participation count.

•Protect local communities, their economies, and democracies against illegitimate "preemption" actions by global, national, and state governments.

AND

http://www.freespeechforpeople.org/

On January 21, 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations are entitled to spend unlimited funds in our elections.

The First Amendment was never intended to protect corporations.

This cannot stand. Sign up to protest this decision and protect our democracy!

Free speech is for people — not corporations.

1. I recall reading that FDR had a solution
He increased the number of justices and nominated two new justices that agreed with him, if my memory serves me well.
It would be interesting to see if this is still possible.

7. It still is possible
as far as I know.

I doubt Obama would want to face the backlash, but it's not illegal or unconstitutional.

I kinda hope he does it anyway.

11. It didn't work for him -- he lost that battle.
And given the WH's actions this past year, retreating is more likely than attacking.

3. Okay, if money = speech,
can I pay off my mortgage with words?

how much is a word worth? a cent? 1/20th of a cent? 1/100th of a cent?

Without a specific value, speech can't equal money, since money has value. And if I remember my basic mathematics correctly, if A equals B, then B equal A.

So, if I wrote a book and got paid $1500 for it, could I give a copy of that book -- meaning, the words for which I was paid $1500 -- and pay off my credit card bill?

Are all words of equal value? Or are some "$10 words" and others only worth "two cents"? Which ones?

Can I go to the grocery store and pay for my milk and eggs and ice cream and mushrooms with words?

Can I walk into the county treasurer's office and pay my property tax with words?

Can I pay the electric bill with words?

Ah, I didn't think so.

4. And what do we do
Some days as an American citizen I feel that I have no voice in the way that I live.

8. I know that feeling. We can start by adding our voices to

theirs? Both groups seem well-organized and committed ... it's something.

Beats passing the cyanide cocktail around.

6. Nice idea but...
do you really think you can get 67 votes for it in the Senate, and then 38 states to ratify it?

12. Well.........it is either
We do nothing and let this country explode

We curl up and die

We try to move to a different country and probably go through this again

Or we decide to get angry and fight back
