Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 04:52 PM by rd_kent
The company will stop inscribing biblical passages on sights and will provide kits to remove them from existing sights in the inventory.

16. In one of the multiple previous threads about this 'atrocity' (sarcasm)
there was a statement by the mfr that anytime anyone asked about these tiny inscriptions, they owned up to it. There wasn't an effort to dupe anyone.

19. Every shoplifter says "I was gonna pay for that."

Saying what you were going to do after 30 years of doing something else is just BS and you should be smarter than that.

20. The company neither hid the inscriptions, nor did they deny their
existence when asked. From the articles, it doesn't appear they were ever asked to cease and desist. Therefore, they are not guilty of "saying what you were going to do after 30 years of doing something else..."

From one of the many earlier threads, here you go:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=7509635

"We don't publicize this," Tom Munson, Trijicon's director of sales and marketing, said in an interview. "It's not something we make a big deal out of. But when asked, we say, 'Yes, it's there."'

Are Bible verses NOT hidden code?

If they aren't then tell me the 3rd sentence of the Koran and tell me WHY that sentence is third.

25. Jeez, there is nothing to disprove. The inscriptions are on the sights, that's
a fact. They are in tiny letters/numbers, also a fact. The company does not deny putting them there, and they did not deny their existence when asked about them - two more facts.

If I am being shot at, it would not matter a tinker's damn what may be inscribed as part of a serial number on a telescopic sight, the concern for me would be the bullets - a fact.

As the user of the weapon/sight combination if I were a non christian of any ilk, even a pagan, the tiny letter/number series would be meaningless, and so, not bothersome.

This whole flailex is simply a non-issue for most people who have real lives - but by damn it's fun to talk about with the ones who have wadded up panties about it. And that, is a fact.

4. Are they going to Recall all the ones out in the field that are endangering our troops????
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 04:59 PM by slampoet
Are they going to refund the money they tricked the government into spending on items that promoted religion ?

Are they going to be charged with violating the constitution?

Are they even going to loose their contract?

10. "Endagering" our troops.
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 05:30 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Forget about getting shot at by enemy forces...
they need to be worried about "N8:12" in the serial number of the 4pt font stamped on the base of the sight.
They're probably in more danger from the radioactive tritium that illuminates the optics in question.

#1) No, items were inspected as-received and signed off on. I'm sure they've been doing the same thing for 30yrs... is the all knowing army supposed to claim ignorance?
#2) No, private company making sigts for the public market. The gov't is responsible for procurement & investigation.
#3) No, they won't. They make a unique useful product that the military wants.

Personally, I hope the surplus sights get dumped onthe open market.
I'd love to buy a trijicon ACOG for cheap.

17. Read your history. Ever hear of the Sepoy Rebellion????
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Rebellion_of_1857

The final spark was provided by the reaction of Company officers to the controversy over the ammunition for new Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle. To load the new rifle, the sepoys had to bite the cartridge open. It was believed that the paper cartridges that were standard issue with the rifle were greased with lard (pork fat) which was regarded as unclean by Muslims, or tallow (beef fat), regarded as anathema to Hindus.<16>

If we want the Afghans to stand up with us and not against us, things like this are important.

11. No, they are providing kits
probably so the Company-level armorer can remove the raised letters/numbers.

A fingernail file and a bit of black paint. And if five minutes, Walla! It's de-christianized.

Lose the contract? No, they're still good sights, sort of a poor-man's night vision.

9. Much ado about nothing.
These are civilian sights that the government buys because they are really great sights.
The "bible passage" is a letter:number (ie: "N8:12") suffixed to the end of the serial number.
Nearly unnoticable.

What kicks me is people are saying the rifle is engraved.
It is not. An off-the-shelf optics accessory that the government buys is stamped.

I find this every bit as amusing as teabagger wailin, "OMG teh GAYZ... run!!11!"

13. You cant see how our enemies could use this
In recruiting propaganda?

Cant see how it could harm our people in the field and bolster the crusade myth they push?

Really?

14. Our own army didn't recognize this decades old practice of trijicon until now.
What makes you think our enemies would have known about this?

Also, you really think terrorists are "honest" with those whom they recruit? Religious extremists brainwash the soldiers. I'll bet the shit they tell recruits about americans is 500X worse than 5 characters printed in microscopic font on the bottom of a rifle sight.

Much ado about nothing.
Enjoy your outrage.

22. Outrage? Dude, settle down
This wouldn't be a problem if it remained hidden forever. It's fairly arcane too so probably no one will ever figure it out and blare it across international news sites...

Oh wait, that's exactly what happened.

Now they can tell their recruits bullshit like this is a christian crusade and point to this story to back it up. It's a generous handout to the people we should be fighting. Dumb move.

15. It's maybe just me, but I'd be more concerned about the bullets
coming out of the rifle, in my direction, than wondering if maybe there was a number to a verse from someone's bible on the sight.

24. It's about handing their side a PR win on a silver platter
Maybe you should be concerned with what benefits extremest recruiting as well as bullets. One tends to increase the number of the other.

One we didn't need to give them.
