Look for Kay Bailey Hutchison to expand her circle of support from the Bushies in her bid to unseat Gov. Rick Perry. Hutchison this week added endorsements from James Baker, who served as secretary of state under George HW Bush. Earlier, Bush 43 Vice President Dick Cheney came to Texas to publicly endorse Hutchison. And the Republican senator has plenty of support from one-time aides to George W. Bush - informal advisers Karl Rove and Karen Hughes as well as former education secretary Margaret Spellings.
Now, comes Poppy Bush. A source close to the campaign confirms that Bush 41 himself will soon publicly endorse Hutchison. That pretty much leaves Bush 43, who says he's remaining neutral in the race.
It's Official: The Hutchison camp announced Thursday morning that Bush 41 will publicly endorse Hutchison tomorrow in Houston. It will be at the former president's office. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush will be there.
As for Perry, his big-name endorsement is Sarah Palin, who's scheduled to join the Republican governor Sunday, Feb. 7 in Houston. Palin is the hottest ticket on the Republican circuit. She's a favorite of the GOP's populist, Tea Bag wing, a constituency that will be important in the March Republican primary in Texas. Perry is making a big deal about Hutchison's support for the initial $700 billion federal bailout. Interestingly, Palin supports it. During an interview on CNN in October 2008, Palin called it "the right thing to do" in order to forestall an economic collapse. "Government did have to step in," she said. I'll be interesting to see if Perry, with Palin at his side, denounces bailout supporters (i.e. Hutchison) as enemies of the state.
