After today's ruling, with regrets, I am cancelling my ACLU membership
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 08:55 PM by scheming daemons
The ACLU argued on the side of corporations today.

The ACLU, normally a bastion for good and a protector of INDIVIDUAL rights in this country, sold its soul to join in hammering the final nail in our democratic-republic.

To actually argue in FAVOR of corporate personhood... either completely misguided or with an alterior motive, I don't know.... that's my breaking point with the ACLU.

Goodbye, ACLU. You successfully worked to make me and my family serfs.

ON EDIT:

Link to the amicus brief that ACLU filed on BEHALF of Citizens United:

3. with everything wrong and worth fighting to fix, their priorities are shit
who gives a fuck about the poor widdle corporations' "freedom of speech"?

good grief, they can get their funding from GE, Haliburton, and Comcast, then, if they're so "concerned" and that's where they want to put their energy.

7. I don't see anything on the ACLU's website about this.
If they did, they aren't advertising it.

16. They will STALK you for years, and you will not get away easily.
I gave them probably $50 5 years ago and they have sent me $150 in renewal mailings. Never seen anything like it.

12. I'm fine with that. They consistently take a strong, absolutist approach to the First Amendment.
We need that kind of view; it's a valuable one, though not one that should always triumph.

14. The 1st amendment.. and the other 9 bill of rights... apply to CITIZENS (individuals)
...not entities.

Corporations are *NOT* citizens. The Bill of Rights applies to INDIVIDUALS.

13. my experience w/ aclu
was that I received more in direct mail, far more, than what I donated to them, so I concluded donating any more to them was a waste of my money that would be recycled in postage costs back to me.

18. Likely they saw it as free speech
Like defending the nazis

the thing is there is in theory at least no problem here, we don't have to vote for whoever the corps tell us to in their ads.

Most of this is based on the supposed helplessness of the American voter. Unable to resist corporate ads.

Corporatist/fascist regimes are rough as hell on civil liberties. The ACLU has fucked itself and all of us.
