Arlen Specter tells Bachmann to act like a lady
Arlen Specter and Bachmann were having a political discussion on WPHT in Philadelphia today when Specter was taking his turn to answer a question. Every time he tried to explain something Bachmann wold talk over him and interrupt. Finally Specter told her to let him speak and act 'LIKE A LADY'.

Wonder if she got the message.

1. To be fair, that's a bad choice of words.
Were Bachmann on our side and Specter on the other, we'd be pissed right now.

He should have said "Like a human being without rabies".

9. He was referring to the context of a "Lady" or a "Gentleman", as oppossed to
gender. In other words, behave in a respectful, dignified way

not like the screwball, wacko, lunatic you usually are

11. And yet....
no true "gentleman" would think of correcting someone else's bad manners in such a way.

So, much as I dislike interrupters of any sort, he wasn't exactly a poster boy for etiquette when he corrected her in public.

PS...and as someone else stated above....if the "sides" were reversed, people would be jumping up and down in fury right now.

18. if bachmann had told specter to act like a gentleman due to continual interuption, we would not have
issue

he was not using the term in any other way but... i am behaving like a gentleman.

he was not using lady in terms of putting woman in her place

2. What to hate more, Bachmann's obnoxiousness or Specter's sexism?
:puke:

4. It's a hard choice -
but I'd go with hating Bachmann's obnoxiousness more. Besides, Michelle is of the mind set where she'd still refer to herself and other women as "ladies" so Specter was just speaking her language.

10. It wasn't sexism in this context, and from his perspective. When you tell a person
to behave like a "gentleman" or behave like a "lady", that is not sexist

It was another way of saying that she was acting like a rude, obnoxious person

He didn't mean it in the conotation you are describing

3. People here may not like it but she needed to be told that.
Remember the horrible things that Bachmann has said regarding the President of the United States.

6. True.
Specter's word choice was poor though--I wouldn't put it up with Harry Reid's little miscue, but it's in a similar vein.

13. Poor Specter...Host was to blame..
I am so tired of these tv hosts who allow their guests to talk over each other - one of the main reasons I hate Hardball..

And these conservatives have no manners and always try to take up all the time.

I suppose there are some pissed off repugs, but screw 'em. She needed to be told that, and I think he chose exactly the right words to get his point across to her (especially considering who "her" was).

19. this would have been no different if specter had told a man to act like a gentleman.
she was being rude. he was telling her to hold her manners.

he was not putting her in her place.

there is a difference. and there is a place for gentleman/lady or in other words, civility
