Why the Republicans should be afraid of this, too.
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 10:54 PM by joeunderdog
Giving corporations access to the pols by way of endless campaign financing renders everyone's vote meaningless. Politicians will no longer will have to play to the usual divisive agenda, whether it's Creativism, ridiculous gun rights, gay rights, "I Hate Big Government" or any other issue that has historically gathered votes for the hidden corporate agenda. They will simply no longer need these votes, so all of this politicking will change dramatically. The simple fact is, no one will get in office that doesn't promise to make more money for the corporations that will put them in office. The average Democrat or Republican will have no effect on who gets in office anymore.

So here's just a partial list of what your Republican pals will get from our new way of doing Business:
* Politicians will now be funded by corporations needing contracts which are funded by your tax dollars. Military, infrastructure and any other projects will be priced and awarded to benefit the people (er, corporations) who put them into office. Get out your wallet--all those years of rooting for smaller government down the drain.
* Foreign money will strong-arm elections and influence how much American money gets spent abroad.
* Insurance companies will heavily fund the campaigns of pols who will legislate to maximize their profits by cutting your benefits and raising your premiums, and they will use your money to elect pols to do it. What are you going to do about it, move to Canada?
* Maybe now the politicians will promote abortions and other value based agenda items just to make money.
* Corporations that need cheap labor will likely help elect officials to reduce border security and encourage immigration. Dial 2 for Fascism.

Want lower taxes and smaller government? Tell your Repuke pals they better try another country now. They'll be begging for Democratic tax policy before you can say Fascist Regime.

Please feel free to add to the list.

2. On immigration it will really bite the know-nothings in the ass.
Big Bidness will fund candidates who support "immigration reform", which means an endless funnel of quasi-slaves who will work for crap wages with no benefits and no safety standards. Hope the dumbasses like that.

4. The GOOP Catch 22
OK...their dream is no one pays any taxes...especially the rich. OK...so they finally achieve Grover's dream and the government is shrunk and there's virtually no taxes coming in. Where does the money come to pay the billions for the contractors? Think they can get it from a decimated former middle class? Or borrow it from the Chinese? Without government the GOOP has less and less power and their ilk will have less say as well.

Don't underestimate how this ruling could create a stir in the wingnut world as many in their world, the Paulbots and teabaggers in specific are angry at the big banks just as much as we are...and they're not too crazy about other corporate power as well. Just like there are many interests on this side...and many discontent about how various "ponies" haven't been delivered, the same still festers on that side...surely if a rushpublican is elected, the fundies, the teabaggers, the neo cons and the various factions will be making their demands and if it falls upon deaf ears, watch things turn ugly. In many ways that's what happened in the final booosh years as the fundies never got their anti-choice wet dream, the Paulbots were pissed by the rising defecits and the moderates will turn away as well. This will especially be the case when the roads begin to crumble, more bridges fall, power grids overload...and the infrastructure deteriorates.

5. No taxes?
At some point "taxes" may be seen as "profits" and anybody who refuses to raise them will not become a corporate candidate for office.

7. Blood From A Turnip
You can't collect what people don't earn. If you offshore and downsize, where's the money to creat those profits? And I'd love to see a corporate try to force a teabagger to raise those taxes. Then who will they turn to? The rich? Borrow from the Chinese and inflate the dollar like a balloon that decreases their networth? Of course they're too greedy and shortsided to see this, but there is already a lot of distrust on both sides...corporate candidates will face a lot of fire from all sides. Let's let the smoke clear...I think this ruling is attrocious, but could be create more heat for the corporates than light.

6. They are too stupid and ignorant to be afraid.
They believe what is happening is "big government" taking over the private sector instead of the reality of the corporate takeover of our government. We have to attack now, before it is too late, the media sources that poison their increasingly sick minds.

8. The biggest issue I see republicans having with this is foreign influence
Of course I have a problem with that also, as well as the reality that corporations will be buying elections.

I haven't heard any talk yet of what can be done about this. Maybe an amendmant to the constitution declaring that the bill of rights applies to individual citizens, or that corporations are not people.

10. Everyone should be freaked out over this
The only reason they aren't is because they are thinking the big companies are on their side.

11. It's interesting since independents voted for Brown to actually do something about wall street
and corporation. Yes, a republican to actually do something other than be a "no." He better recognize this or he will be the example of why independents will run from the GOP as quickly as they jumped on board.

It's a great opportunity for Obama to put the pedal to the metal.
