Help for jobless, don't wait, call a local Census office today
http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/how-to-apply/

I worked in the 2000 Census. People of ALL ages are welcome and the pay is especially good for temporary work. Plus you get opportunity to exercise and learn some new skills. They have already begun testing. Make an appointment and go take the test. I think it is 28 questions and there is a practice test on the website in case you have test anxiety. Painless it is. You fill out some VERY basic employment questions the day of the test, then they call you in for training.

Do not wait. Call now. 1-866-861-2010

full time job. If I am working a part time job for the Census I am not available for full time employment. I don't think $11.00 is especially good pay when you consider you have go knock on some wing-nut's door that thinks Census takers are there to take their guns.

3. At least here, I have read pay is as high as $16/hr.
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 01:22 PM by Mithreal
Is probably only for crew leaders and assistants though. That is a $4/hour increase over what I received in 2000. If the census takers didn't receive a similar raise, it would be a shame.

So you know, I often had people work in teams of two.

Just checked, $13.25 per hour for regular Census takers.

5. $16.75 an hour in my area. In some other Colorado areas it can be as low as $13.00
I wonder why the difference?

haven't investigated though.

9. I'm not saying it is bad since many people are running out of
unemployment and anything is better than nothing. Myself I take home $600 a week with my unemployment and supplemental unemployment from my employer (that's the advantage of belonging to a Union). My employer also carries our health coverage for two full years after you are laid off.

11. I hear ya. I thought about how we have been scammed so badly
with employment and unemployment rules the way they are. I didn't think worse of your comment.

$12/hr is below what I even consider a living wage in a lot of places.

I have heard if we used real inflation numbers that national minimum wage if based upon 60's minimum wage and buying power we should have a minimum wage now over $16. Hope I said that right. Could be misremembering and didn't investigate it further though.

6. A couple weeks ago there were a couple people at the Mall
recruiting for the Census. They gave me a brochure that said census takes earn from $11.00 to I think $15.00 in Ohio. I checked the web site and there are different pay rates around the state. The large cities like Columbus or Cleveland were $15.00 an hour but in the rural ares here the pay rate is $11.00. I guess it must be based on the cost of living in different areas. I'm not so sure I would want to go up to a Cleveland crack dealers house unarmed and as him any questions either for even $30.00 an hour.

were "crack" houses.

In my experience, that is usually when a Team Leader steps in to help though. I know, I did on more than one occasion.

10. Census jobs are great, don't get me wrong, but a word of warning
There are many people, at least in certain states and certain areas (mainly rural) that have been whipped into a frothing frenzy about the Census. Most of these people are RW idiots who've listened to too much Limbaugh/Beck/Faux, but nonetheless, they're in an uproar. I've heard threats of violence to be perpetrate against Census workers, everything from beatings to shooting them. Sure, a lot of this is just talk, but I'm sure that some of it isn't.

Be careful out there.

15. If it in any way damages your unemployment benefit, don't bother.
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 03:15 PM by tonysam
You have to be available for full time, "suitable" work. Temporary work isn't the same thing, and you don't want to jeopardize your UI to take a temp job, and then find you're screwed over UI.

In the past I was able to work part time and get UI, although I was penalized dollar for dollar after the first ten hours. The rules might still be true now.
