.R.I.P. America....Land of the not so free.........
Once we were a beacon of hope and light to the world.
Now people are trying to find a way to move out.
Once we had freedom because we had a Bill of Rights...
Now our judges say they will not stop the government from spying on everyone and anyone.
Once we had a Constitution but our government passed the Patriot Act and now we have nothing left but a "God damned piece of paper." with most of the rights and checks and balances stripped out..or just ignored.
Once we had jobs...but our government outsourced those jobs and now we have families living on the streets and returning vets and young kids and family providers killing themselves (and often taking their family with them unto death)because they see no future.
Once we had small businesses but now we have mega monster stores and shops on main street sit empty.
Once we had Banks where we thought our money was safe...now they are robbing us to bail the crooks in the banks out.
Once we had family doctors we could trust. Now insurance companies run our health care and it's all about the bottom line.
Once we had wonderful schools but now our schools are falling apart and now the students can not read or write or know how to think for themselves.
Once we could travel all around this great nation and all around the world.
But now we are poked and prodded and tazed and filmed naked and stopped for our papers.
Once we could peacefully protest and petition our government for redress of our grievances.
Now we are forced to buy permits for everything, protest in cages and if we do protest in public...we are happy to only be arrested and not pepper sprayed, shot with rubber bullets or nuked to the point of burning the top layer of our skin (or so they say its "only the top layer"..never mind microwaves cook from the inside-out) or having our hearing destroyed.
Once we had elections we thought we could trust.
Now we still have Diebold even though we KNOW they are easy to rig and that elections were stolen.
Once we were world wide famous for being a kind nation that rushed to help our fellow earthlings during disasters.
Now we are occupiers of lands that sit on oil and are killing the natives that want us out. We have just poured 20 thousand troops into Haiti and taken over the airports and the waters and the government so far. We are turning away ships and doctors and supplies....Does this sound like we are there only to "help"? Will we ever leave now we know Haiti sits on oil?
Once we were a "Nation of Laws"....and now we are a nation ruled by the lawless and to whom the law does not apply.
Once we thought we could buy homes and have our own place but now we know that the government can come in and take anything they like..anytime they want to and for any reason.
Once we had freedom of religion...now we have the far right fundies taking over the air force and running the pentagon and putting bible verses on gun scopes to kill people with and killing doctors and oppressing other people's rights and freedoms.
Once we had to have been at least suspected of breaking the law and a judge had to issue a warrant but only if there was sufficient evidence.
Now all you have to do is "look wrong" and the government can kick your doors down.
Once we had armed forces that we could be proud of...now they are torturing and killing kids and grandparents and blowing up civilians and saying "collateral damage" like they don't matter.
(Thank God some of our troops are still the good guys..but I fear they are being replaced with hired killers)
Once we had a police force that protected and served the community.
Now we have a police force that acts like the mafia and can kill you with a tazer for not moving fast enough or just because they had a bad day or maybe for the terrible crime of crossing a white line.
Once we believed that with hard work and saving we could retire to a peaceful old age. Now we see that will not happen because our retirement funds have been raped and or stolen and social security has been robbed as well..
Once we had the right to a speedy trial...but now we can be "disappeared/renditioned" and no one will know where we go or what happens to us.
Once we had leaders that fought for us. Now we have leaders that sell us out to the highest bidder.
Once we had to be humane to our prisoners. Now the government murders those they don't want to talk to the public or just moves them or tortures them and nothing is done about it.
Once we had hope for a change we could believe in.
Now we have to hope we are not next.
Rest in Peace America.
You were once a beautiful dream for the world. Now you have turned into the World's worst nightmare.
I weep for my nation and for my fellow Americans...as well as for all the people of other nations we have and are still harming.
Hold on America...stop fighting among yourselves because you are going to need each other to survive soon.....because this ride is about to become even bumpier by far this coming fall as we realize that the Great Bush Depression is fully upon us and we have not even hit the bottom yet......with no jobs there is NO recovery..I don't care what they tell us....it's just not possible without jobs.
The health care bill is dead..and that is a good thing because it was a terrible bill and was a sell-out to the insurance companies that caused this mess in the first place......but we still don't have health care for all and people are dying as we wait for Congress to do their damned job.
Hell America is dying as we wait for Congress to do their damned job.

16. When someone says the "good old days," they're usually talking
about the 50s. Those were distinctly not "good old days," for the most part. I always ask anyone who uses that phrase to name the time period.

Not such good times, really. I wrote a long post to that person. Me, I liked the 1970s a lot. But, then, I was stoned much of the time.

23. There ya go. Those days in the late teens and early 20s are
the best, for most folks. I spent four of them in the USAF, but that didn't slow me down much. You could buy hash in the pharmacy in Turkey, and I was stationed at Ft. Meade, just outside DC for the last year of my service in 68-69. Lots going on there to attract a 22-23 year old. It wasn't so bad.

Then, I went back to college on the GI Bill, and managed to live on $256/mo. Lots of good times then. For me, at least. Not everyone had it so good, though, and things got really political pretty early in the 70s. Still...

I enjoyed those '50s, too, but was just a kid and knew nothing about the real world. It was great to be a white kid in a small California town. Not so much for many others.

17. well they weren't perfect,
but the 40s after WWII. my dad was a blue collar worker, but he made enough so my mom didn't have to work. they saved a little each week and in the 50s were able to purchase a small house.

i grew up in queens, new york. my grandfather owned a bar and was president of the democratic club. my grandparents lived in an apartment upstairs. we lived there too while dad was in the navy. my aunt and cousins lived on the top floor. the rest of my aunts and uncles and cousins all lived within walking distance.

crime was rare. you could go out at night and feel safe. everyone knew everyone else in the neighborhood. in the summer at night people would bring chairs outside and sit and enjoy the weather and chat with those who were out for a walk.

we had "mom and pop" stores. there were stores that sold just fruits and vegetables. there was the butcher who knew just what cut of meat to give you when you said you wanted to make a pot roast. if you got something in your eye you went to the pharmacy and he took it out. he also knew what drugs to give you for a cold, etc.

i'd like to hear your experiences.

19. Ah, the late 40s and early 50s. That's what I thought you meant.
Good old days for whom? Blacks? Women? Lots of minorities there in Queens back then, were there? Of course there was no crime. Only white people were allowed to live there. In much of the country, blacks got to stay out of most places, and had their own drinking fountains and toilets. And, if you were a woman, your husband could beat you and nobody would care. Get pregnant unwillingly? Well, you could go to your aunt's house somewhere, I suppose.

I grew up in the 50's. There were no blacks allowed to live in the town where I grew up...by law. There was a little town not too far away where the blacks could live. It sucked. You couldn't buy condoms. Women couldn't get a prescription for a diaphragm until 1957 in California. If a woman didn't have a man to support her, she had a hell of a time finding a job that could support a family.

If you got cancer, as people did then, just as they do today, it was simply a death sentence. Children got every childhood illness, since there were no vaccines, and some, like my best friend, died from the measles.

If you had a mental disability, you couldn't go to school. There was no program for you. You'd probably be advised to institutionalize your child if it had such a disability. If you had a mental disorder, you had two choices: Live with it or go to a state hospital, and those were just wonderful places. No lithium. No drugs to help with things like bipolar disorder.

When I was a kid in grammar school, we had regular drills where we dove under our desks and covered our eyes against the "nuclear flash." My father was worried sick that, after flying B-17s in WWII, he'd be called up to go to Korea.

We had Mexican laborers in my town. They weren't illegal. They were legal slaves, bound to labor organizations that milked the little money they made from them in their stores. They weren't allowed to leave their camps. It was called the "bracero" program. These workers were promised that money was set aside for them by the government. They never got it.

Oh, yes, it was a wonderful time, if you were white, male, and had a decent job. Otherwise, not so much. You're remembering just a tiny part of those days, when you were a child and didn't have to worry about all that grown-up stuff.

It was just fine for some. Not so good for others. For the others, they were the "shitty old days." I'm very glad you had a nice time.

If you care enough to post your long list of whines, can't you care enough to format them so they're easy to read. Just hit the Enter key twice at the end of each paragraph. How hard is that.

Unrecommended for unreadability.

43. "We" as in those that relate to the feelings of frustration about the situation.
Edited on Sat Jan-23-10 04:24 PM by winyanstaz
Just so you know...some people do feel the same sorrow and frustration as I was feeling when I posted this thread.
No I am not keeping track :)

However, if I wished to use the royal "we" I have every right to do so.

I am the great great granddaughter of a Mc'kmaq (sometimes spelled Micmac) Chief and there is also a Huron war chief grandfather in the family tree.

I am of the House of Dugus, The House of Forest, The House of Melanson, the House of Gaudet, the House of Deucet, the House of Arsenaul, the House of Territ, The House of Richard and the House of Brossard. There are a few more but I don't remember them off the top of my head right now...

I am also the ever so many great great great etc granddaughter of William the Conquerer. Many of my great etc grandparents had to flee France to save their royal necks.

I have enough family crests to wallpaper the hallway. That and five bucks will buy me a cup of coffee at starbucks.

So yes,I certainly can say "we" and I don't have to explain it to you. I do so only so perhaps you won't be so rude to people you don't know in the future. :)

As far as the myth goes, I suggest you consult the People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn to see what the US REALLY stood for.

i have read the people's history. ever since good will hunting told me to.

i find it so typical that anti-american types think that people like me think the way we do because we haven't been exposed to the great truths by such sages as zinn, etc.

yes, i've read people's history.

and a fair bit of chomsky.

and even some foucault. in french.

one can be familiar with viewpoints and DISAGREE with them.

don;'t assume that because i love my country, and do not think it a myth that we are a shining beacon, that i am unfamiliar with the works of such people as zinn.

K & FUCKING R

And to those who unrec:

STOP BEING WEAK, SOFT, COWARDS and FACE WHAT IS GOING ON.

29. A bit of its territory lays very very close to Cuba's off shore oil....
not only that they have needed minerals for the war machine..and is a handy dandy jump off port if we ever need to "save" Cuba.

33. no....sorry....no conspiracy there,,,,of course they are being tapped..
Cuba is tapping them.
Try to read please.....and understand.
I am not implying things when I post.
I mean exactly what I post..nothing more..nothing less.
Have you never heard of slant drilling? Isnt that what Saddam invaded Kuwait over? There is a huge oil deposit under the seas there.
And of course the Haitians are trying to mine the minerals. That's why we know they are there.
Have you not noticed that every single place we are having wars at have oil and or drugs or something we want?
Maybe you have not noticed yet that we never leave after we get there either.

After reading another of your posts at LEAST you aren't giving up without a fight.

Snark forgiven.

But I'd advise not going there with me in the future. :)

YOU came at ME, for no reason at all, so get over yourself.

I was right about you the first time.

The OP was very thoughtful, and unfortunately, quite accurate. If you are too much of a coward to handle that, fine, but if one liner BS and needlessly attacking someone who didn't even write it is all you have to offer, then you are as useless as Monopoly Money.

And here's a newsflash for YOU.

I'll "go" wherever I DAMN WELL PLEASE as well.

And you will deal with it.

Don't waste your time trying to intimidate me, little boy.

Now, please return to your cocoon of fake political theater, and pretend like you know something.

*Click*

I don't have time for ignorance like yours anymore.

Your country is disappearing in front of your eyes.

And you are attacking people whose only crime is FACING THE REALITY OF IT, and SPEAKING OUT ABOUT IT.

Grow Up, Wise up, and WAKE UP.

69. ...
Once we were a beacon of hope and light to the world.
Now people are trying to find a way to move out.

a few DUers moving out - and they either can't or won't for real - is not a mass exodus. When my ancestors came there was a mass exodus from the place they came from.

Once we had freedom because we had a Bill of Rights...
Now our judges say they will not stop the government from spying on everyone and anyone.

we still have it and it's way too early to give up. But what decision is being cited here? Because it ain't cited.

Once we had jobs...but our government outsourced those jobs
Now we have families living on the streets and returning vets and young kids and family providers killing

the government did not do this.

39. We are nearing the time, I am afraid, of Terminal Superior Indifference.
Edited on Sat Jan-23-10 05:22 AM by TheWatcher
If you know history, you know of that which I refer to.

It angers, horrifies, disappoints, and frustrates us to see the majority of our people refuse to face what is going on.

Whether it be fear, willful ignorance, or even submission, resignation, and yes, even complicity, it is becoming clearer every day that perhaps the patient does not WISH to be saved, or simlpy CANNOT save itself.

Our choices?

Giving up is not one of them.

We must RESIST, and do whatever we can to make a difference, and TRY to save our country, and take it back.

If the patient still refuses to be saved, then our final choices are thus:

Go down swinging, or Sing a chorus of "So Long, Farewell" And quietly cross the mountain range.

The country needs to get mad as hell, and not take this anymore.

Sadly, if you take into account a certain definition of ignorance, our country is perhaps the happiest on Earth right now.

We are almost out of time.

50. All empires eventually fall
When it happens to us it will be because we deserved it. You say we should RESIST and that is all well and good but do you really think we should engage in actual violent conflict with the Teabaggers and their ilk? Do you really want another civil war?

It seems we are becoming the Corporate States of America but how do we stop it when the SCOTUS is on THEIR side? Sometimes I think it would be better to let the country fail. It doesn't deserve those of us who truly believe in freedom and liberty for ALL people, even the ingrate teabaggers. Canada is looking better and better to me every day.

Besides, I firmly believe that we (humans)are destroying our environment. In 50 years it most likely will no longer be liveable and all this will be moot.

55. I will never bow my head to corporate slavery....
I do not want a civil war...
I want peace.
Sometimes though you have to stand up to bullies or they will never stop.
The trick now is to find a way to do it lawfully and that's getting harder to do every day. It might now well be impossible.
However we cannot give up the ship until after it goes down. Do not give up before everything has been tried.
There is really no place to run from the New World Order. We must make a stand.
What kind of a stand remains to be seen..but we have to try.

63. In almost 9 years on DU
I have seen America's epitaph written countless times on here. The '02 mid-terms, the '04 'election', etc. It's melodramatic, whiny, "look at me!" claptrap, and as the OP shows, full of myths which should have never been bought into in the first place. Any person who posts such drivel and pablum deserves to be disillusioned and their hands should fall off from all the wringing. Woe is us! Excuse me while I place a cool wet towel on my forehead. Martyrdom is stressful!

73. My post was seriously misunderstood too
As if I am some kind of mindless complacent dolt, LOL. I got over any illusions about America by the time Reagan left office, but somehow, making fun of yet another "America is DEAD!!!11 OMG!!11" post makes me "the enemy". So it's not so much the arguments that draw my ridicule, it's the HIGH DRAMA. Still, whether America has "died" or not, during Vietnam, during Reagan, during Bush II - it doesn't matter, because anyone can argue those points all day. It's the fact that you can always count on a handful of DUers to come up with their own time/event, and whine to the skies with much wailing and gnashing of teeth - THAT'S what made me mock the OP. If or when it did happen, it deserves a more sobering analysis than "I WEEP!".

Ah, fuck it. :D
