RI judge gets panel's OK for appeals court seat

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Rhode Island trial judge has cleared a hurdle in Washington toward winning confirmation for a seat on a federal appeals court.

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved Superior Court Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson for the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. Her nomination now goes before the full Senate.

Thompson was recommended for the opening by Rhode Island's two Democratic senators, Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed, and then nominated by President Barack Obama.

The court hears appeals of federal cases from most of New England as well as from Puerto Rico.
