Retirement community holds "Telethon for Haiti", raises $18,000!

They may not have had the starpower or the glitz of the big telethons. But the residents of the Linden Ponds retirement community in Hingham pitched in with their own TV fundraiser this week to help relieve the suffering in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

In a two-hour telethon on their community television station Wednesday, the retirement community's residents raised about $18,000 to assist the Haitian employees of the facility who have relatives in the country.

"We have 44 Haitian employees that we wanted to wrap our arms around," said Meredith Scott, the director of residence life at Linden Ponds.

Scott said the funds would initially fund the immediate needs of the Haitian employees; some need to travel to Haiti to find or bury relatives, while others are working to bring family members to America, Scott said.
