Santa Clarita councilman says he is a `proud racist'

In a heated speech at an anti-illegal-immigration rally, a Santa Clarita city councilman called himself a "proud racist" — a comment that has outraged some residents and political opponents.

...

"The only thing I heard back from a couple of people was `Bob, you sound like a racist.'

"I said, `That's good. If that's what you think I am because I happen to believe in America, then I'm a proud racist. You're darn right I am."'

He must be proud to be an imbecile.
Who are these jerks that think they can get away with this crap in public?

1. WTF?
I don't know if the white dumbasses' base will be able to sustain a drive to power or not. If so, it won't be for more than a generation. But, damn, I'm getting sick of the dumbasses who think turning the volume of their rhetoric up to 11 passes for intelligence.

6. Probably still feels more like the parent of a murdered child than a black man.

3. That is not exactly true
Let me rephrase what he said in a different context.

If voting for Obama means I'm a racist, then I'm a proud racist.

If opposing the Iraq war means I'm a coward, then I'm a proud coward.

If supporting single payer health care reform makes me a communist, than I'm a proud communist.

4. "proud racist"
I think you have the better sense of what he meant. He is proud to stand up for what he believes, even if it is not popular. However, for an elected official to use "proud" and "racist" in the same speech, let alone sentence, is juvenile irresponsibility at best.

13. Actually, what he said was closer to...
"if discriminating against people of color makes me a racist then I am a proud racist."

8. "Proud racist"? Enough said.
Sorry Mr. Van Winkle, you've slept for 55 years too long. Get with the times.

Just because your friend was shot by someone who wasn't supposed to be here is no license to speak in bigoted terms against Mexicans. Remember, criminality does not discriminate. Some of the most notorious mass murderers in American history, such as Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer, were citizens! So are we gonna throw all murderers in Guantanamo then?

10. Santa Clarita info
Doesn't surprised me. Santa Clarita tries to be an isolated white city that has pockets of Hispanic areas. I'm sure the whites will eventually move away to Palmdale or Lancaster eventually.

11. Santa Clarita is one scary-ass Stepford/Repuke/Racist enclave
It's a Thomas Kinkkkade wet dream, where the mall plays 50's music, not only indoors, but blares it outdoors too, to feed that not-so-latent longing for those days when white people ran everything and Nu Perfeckkkt Republikkkan Amerikkka prevailed. It's a scary, creepy place. The sterile Stepfordian soccer-mom android hellhole of L.A. County. Of course, they're all good christians.

15. People are taking an apodosis as an independent statement.
Okay, they don't teach formal rhetoric any more in public schools.

Do they teach minimal comprehension skills?

Or has everybody simply taken the protasis to be categorically true, so the apodosis is automatically true. That is, you can't believe in America unless you're a white racist.

Protasis and apodosis = if-clause and then-clause in an if-then sentence. Perhaps programmers are more familiar with such ideas.

I think I'd offer the following:

If Obama wanted to be president, (then) he believed in America.

If Obama believed in America, (then) Obama is a white racist.

Since everybody who believes in America is a white racist, (therefore) Obama must be a white racist.

Sounds silly?

Ah, well, then. Instead of a couple of Greek terms, perhaps a Latin one beginning "reductio" is more appropriate. Allowing blatant ill-will to trump one's ability to actually read for comprehension certainly counts as "absurd".
