Wal-Mart to cut 11,200 jobs at Sam’s Club stores

NEW YORK | Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Sunday it is cutting about 11,200 jobs at its Sam’s Club warehouse division as it outsources its product-sampling department to marketing company Shopper Events in an effort to win more customers and boost lagging sales.

The terminations represent about 10 percent of the warehouse club operator’s 110,000 staffers across its 600 stores. About 10,000 members of the demonstration department, most part-time workers, were let go. Employees were told the news at mandatory meetings on Sunday morning.

“In the club channel, demo sampling events are a very important part of the experience,” said Sam’s Club CEO Brian Cornell in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “Shopper Events specializes in this area, and they can take our sampling program to the next level.”

Shopper Events, based in Rogers, Ark., currently works with Wal-Mart’s namesake stores on in-store demonstrations.

1. How many times have you gone into Sam's because you were

at least slightly influenced by the thought of the free samples. Without the samples, how many people will skip Sam's on their next shopping trip?

But if you read the article you see that they are NOT discontinuing the samples, they are outsourcing this program.

which can and does result in people losing jobs.

6. WalMart is a predator

They have put several companies out of business (Rubbermaid is a recent example).

WalMart opened 50 super centers in Iowa and 500 local retail outlets went out of business.

I'd rather see people employed in local businesses that actually HELP our economy instead of a predator that does more for the Chinese economy. But that's just me I guess :shrug:

They're going to be paying their employees in scrip, like the coal mines used to, where the only place they can spend their money is in the company store.
