Man's Girlfriend Finds His Body On Side Of Road


FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash in which the body of the victim wasn't discovered until the next day.

The crash happened Monday night on the Interstate 95 off-ramp to Oakland Park Boulevard. Delvin Lewis, 29, was killed when the car he was driving slammed into the guardrail.

FHP troopers found a car Tuesday that they thought was an abandoned vehicle. Later that day, the driver's girlfriend spotted the damaged guardrail as she exited the highway, stopped to check and found Lewis' body.

"She came back out here because nobody had heard from him, so when she came back, she saw the body over there. That's when she called," James Habersham, Lewis' uncle, told WPLG-TV.

Police said Lewis' car hit the guardrail so hard that he flew out of the passenger side of the vehicle. His body landed in a ditch behind a retaining wall, and it could not be seen from the road. But the car continued along the guardrail and came to a stop about 300 feet away.

1. Sooooo how is a totally wrecked vehicle an abandoned vehicle?

It's obvious there was a wreck, the police didn't think to run the plates to see where the owner was? If they had they would have discovered that he was missing? Or he was last seen driving his car.

Now the fellow that died had some issues like a suspended license and he was probably speeding which caused his untimely death. Still if the car was wrecked that badly.....

3. Not uncommon for stolen vehicles that are crashed to be abandoned

5. I'd say that failing to wear a seat belt was the cause of his untimely death. People are

rarely thrown from a car when they're buckled up.

pretty.

9. The window was down (no broken glass) and he clearly wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Also, it wasn't 'totally wrecked'.

6. We had that happen a few years ago

The guy was thrown quite a distance into the woods and wasn't found until after family said he never showed up at home.

We happened to be going past as they loaded the body in to the coroners van. My nephew was with us and about 9 at the time, when he told his mom he saw a dead body she had to call us because she didn't think it was possible.
