Some quotes for Robbie Burns Day.
“While Europe's eye is fix'd on mighty things, The fate of empires and the fall of kings; While quacks of State must each produce his plan, And even children lisp the Rights of Man; Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention, The Rights of Woman merit”

“Oh wad some power the giftie gie us To see oursel's as others see us! It wad frae monie a blunder free us, And foolish notion”

“The best laid schemes o' mice and men Gang aft a-gley; And leave us naught but grief and pain For promised joy”

“Man's inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn”

“I pick my favourite quotations and store them in my mind as ready armour, offensive or defensive, amid the struggle of this turbulent existence.”

1. Love Robert Burns.
When I was in law school, my torts professor thought the "mice and men" allusion was attributable to Ernest Hemingway, my fellow law students thought it was John Steinbeck, and I was yelling "You Yahoos! It's Robert Burns!"

It still seems relevant today with the distribution of power in the world being what it is.

4. I coulda had finnian haddie & settled for an English muffin (crumpet)
Where's me cock-a-leekie & tipsy laird?

Thanks for the post & reminding me of Robbie Burns Day. When I was a kid (and now I'm a geezer) my best friend was from Scotland & her family educated me (once we understood each others accents):)

So when I address the dinner tonite (forget the haggis) my husband will love this:

How mony lengthen'd, sage advices,
The husband frae the wife despises!

5. “Man's inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn” So true today!
We learn that the bush greedy commodity crisis caused over a million children to die from hunger. Where are the so-called pro-lifers? Hey? Stuffing ballot boxes no doubt. The calamity of humanity sits at the feet of the so-called "christians." They put bush in power! Is this what they prayed for as they publically prayed for bush to steal the 2000 election?

6. He wrote a very, very long poem to Scotch Whisky
It's called "Scotch Drink." It even contains a jab at the revenuers:

Thae curst horseleeches o' th' Excise
Wha mak the whisky stells their prize-
Haud up thy hand, deil! Ance - twice - thrice!
There, seize the blinkers!
An' bake them up in brunstane pies
For poor damn'd drinkers.

7. I always throught that Burns suffered by not being Irish
but certainly not much.

I remember loving his more ribald and skeptical offerings when I was a kid, and he did have a rare turn of phrase that has lasted when those of more straightforward English poets have gone to dust and been forgotten.

His not safe for work writing is definitely worth a bit keek.
